So hard to vote as they all have their good and bad points. But I have to say overall my vote is for the Sky (love the promenade deck) or it could be the Sun (love the showlounge) or the Star (love the lounges) I just love them all!!!:)

Been thinking about this one and I have decided that even though the new ships have a lot of good points I really do prefer the style of the Pacific Sky and Fair Princess. So my vote is for the SKY!!!:)

Can't comment on Star yet (will be able to in 28 DAYS - YAY), but between Sky and Sun, I would have to say Sky.

Having said that though, Sun did have it's good points - being able to get much closer to the front of the ship on the outside, better sized cabins, the windows on the promenade deck by the shops and Casino and Gazebo bar that you could sit in.

As an overall package though, Sky had a much better feel to it. And didn't have;

  • the horrible showlounge of Sun with it's hideous decor (including golden seahorses on either side of the stage  ) and poles and beams blocking the view from just about everywhere you sat
  • the vibration that Sun has..... steam turbine propulsion is much better
  • disorganised buffet meal servery
  • sour boring old Maitre d' who looked like he'd rather be somewhere else (ok, so this a comparison between the cruises not the ships, but it was a reflection of the differences between the ships, as even the crew were commenting that they prefered Pacific Sky)

Only been on Sun and Sky

Sun beats Sky with

- Bigger, brighter cabins with better storage

- Brighter bathrooms

- Waterslide

- Seemed to be easier to find a sun lounge

Sky beats Sun with

- Great outside Promenade Deck

- Not as tall so you don't feel like you are forever going up and down stairs

- Outback Steakhouse felt a bit more special because it was actually outside and lunch buffet wasn't the mess of Sun.

- Shops were better laid out and felt less cluttered

- Had a real pizzeria

- Casino is tucked away and not out in the open attached to the kids video games

Staff have an effect on your cruise expeience. We had Shona on Sky as CD and she was more engaging and ran a tighter ship than Demo on Sun. The maitre'd on Sky (Boris) was also far more visible than his counterpart on Sun but this changes quite often so you can't really compare.

Sounds like a bit of a mixed bag with pros and cons fro both vessels. How bad is the vibration on the Sun. Is it noticable in the cabins or just dowm the back of the ship. Is it just vibration or a drone? I have cruised on the original Oriana which was very quiet and then on the Fairstar which had a terrible resonance out the back deck, even making the deck lights shake.

Is the Sun that bad????????

Please explain the debacle around the buffet?

Curious.

keith, Sun seemed to be similar to other ships, vibrations, shudders creaks and groans :D The buffet layout is this, central kitchen with a servery on each side about 20feet long.Same on both sides.Imagine how many pax can fit along choosing food. The line stretches back another 20ft past the toilets and lift entrance so you have people coming from all ways, then we reach the doors to the outside deck. Sometimes the line streches that far  So when its your turn you really have to take it all on the one plate as its to long to come back again.I never saw any trays either which would be handy.Hope this explains it  You just have to pick the time right, but then if you leave it too late they start clearing away and the choices are fewer. But whatever you won't starve :p

Can't comment on the Star haven't been on it yet.

Like others have said there's pro's and cons for both ships, the Sun can get a vibration all the way up to the Buffet/Pizzeria depending on how hard they push the engines, the cabins are bigger, better bathrooms but I thinks thats about where it ends. The Sky is laid out better, runs smoother, more open decks, better atmosphere, it has had troubles over the last couple of years but any Ship is only as good as it's maintenance, The Sky gets my vote.

The best ship is always the ship you are on now or the next one you will be aboard!

All ships are different and all ships offer different experiences and we all approach a cruise with our own individual expectations.

It is interesting to read reviews from passengers as they can differ so widely. While one passenger may have the trip of a lifetime, another can't wait for the cruise to finish and get off.

Interesting.

Skyrules comments on the smoothness of the TSS Pacific Sky. We rode her twice as Sky Princess, and she is very smooth at sea, but it is her steam turbine plant that is her doom, and one of the main reasons for her sale to Pulmantours. Steam turbines are very expensive to run and maintain, and poor Pacific Sky has had major problems with her gearbox.

Keith comments on the old Oriana - with her aluminum superstructure, she really vibrated and rattled at service speed, particularly in the Tourist Lounge, aft. I had the pleasure of being on her twice, and the pictures of her being dismantled are truly sad.
