Train travel from Venice to Rome airport?

Recommended Posts

These directions, from Venice's two train stations to the Marittima Cruise Terminal, are from the cruise terminal's website:

FROM THE RAILWAY STATION

From Mestre Railway station (10 km far away from Venice) the Port of Venice can be reached by:

- Taxi cab (about a 20 minute ride)

- Public bus arriving in Piazzale Roma, nearby the Port of Venice.

From S.Lucia Railway station the terminals can be reached by:

- Public water buses (vaporetti) to P.le Roma (1 stop) where you will find the terminal's bus shuttle or you can take a taxi cab (see further instructions 'from P.le Roma')

- Water taxi directly to the cruise terminal

Here's a link to a website with info on taking the train from Rome's Termini (Main Train Station) to the airport:

Has anyone done this trip and do you know how far the station is from the Venice port or how close it is to the Rome Airport. Our cruise ends in Venice but I must fly back home out of Rome.
A quick look at http://www.bahn.de suggests that during the middle of the day there's a direct train from Venice to Rome every two hours, taking 4½ hours.

Not sure if you are familiar with http://www.tripadvisor.com, but it's a great site to get info when travelling by land and you will probably get good advice on using the train between Venice and Rome there.

Here's the link to the Venice Forum page : http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g187870-i57-Venice_Veneto.html

I used tripadviosr a lot last year when planning our excursions in port because we were doing most of them on our own, using local transportation.

Another site for land-based travel is: http://boards.independenttraveler.com/forumdisplay.php?f=109 (I think it's a 'sister-site' to CC.)

We took the train from Venice to Rome a few years ago after ending a cruise there. Just wait and buy "point to point" tickets at the station. Make sure you get a train that doesn't stop at every little town. Forget what the designation is. Rick Steves has great info on this. http://www.ricksteves.com And here's the link to the Italian train system. http://www.trenitalia.com

You will go to "Termini" station in Rome. Then transfer to the high-speed train to Fumincino Airport. Very easy. In my opinion, the trains in Italy are nice and we find 2nd class to be fine. No need to pay for 1st class. We took food and wine with us. Had a lovely picnic aboard, read for awhile, took a snooze and arrived. Can't remember how long it took. It will give times on the Italian rail site.

Enjoy and be sure to spend some time in Venice, my favorite Italian city!

Chiao!

Large ships (such as Princess and Costa ships) invariably use the main Marittima terminal. This is located just south of where the road bridge from the mainland enters the city. It's about a 15-minute walk or a 5-minute taxi or shuttle-bus ride from the Piazzale Roma, the final destination for buses and taxis that enter Venice. You can get from the port to the train station in Venice, St. Lucia, by the the vapporetto. It is the local water bus. Pick it up in Piazzale Roma. Cheap and actually the way to see the city. Just ride it around. Again, Rick Steves has info on all of this. He's the man!

Thanks you guys for the great info. I'll check it out and see what works best. Do you think I need to purchase tickets a head of time or wait until we get to Venice?

The Venice to Rome trains require a compulsory reservation. We have taken trains between Venice-Rome twice and they have always been full. I would definitely purchase the tickets ahead of time.

Not sure what time of year you were traveling but we did not have that experience when we did it in May. Just showed up and bought the ticket. Again, we were traveling 2nd class so maybe that is the difference. Traveled by train all over Italy last May and did the same.

But check out Rick Steves, either online and in a bookstore. He always has the best info.
