sailtex Posted April 22, 2022 #1 Share Posted April 22, 2022 (edited) We’re taking a 12-day Mediterranean cruise in late June: Barcelona to Trieste. I only signed up for this a few weeks ago, so we’re a bit behind the curve in securing the details. Due to an SCI, I use a manual wheelchair full-time. On fairly smooth ground, I can leave many or most of my fellow passengers behind, but steps and some rough roads can stop me cold. My wife is able-bodied and my goal with trip planning is to make this trip as fulfilling as possible for her, independent of my mobility limitations. This is our first cruise. If it goes well, it won’t be our last. We booked a nice suite for what that’s worth making the trip pleasant. At each port, I see four options: 1. Stay on the boat and relax 2. Leave the boat and wander around on our own 3. Schedule a wheelchair accessible excursion with an accessible traveling specialist like sagetraveling.com. Accessible excursions appear to be available at all of our ports. 4. Schedule an Oceania shore excursion for my wife only. No Oceania excursions are listed as wheelchair accessible. I’d be satisfied with 4 or 5 accessible excursions for me. Of course she would be there. In addition, it would be fun to explore a city on our own together when interesting city highlights are easily accessible from the cruise terminal. Where that’s not possible, I’m completely comfortable (as is she) with my wife enjoying a city on a tour without me. My challenge is choosing which port to do what. It seems like I should first identify and choose those ports where independent exploration is an option. Then, of the remainders, I would choose a few for booking accessible tours. Finally, Oceania excursions for my wife could fill in the remaining dates. Can anyone suggest a different approach or suggest a strategy for implementing what I’ve outlined above? Rare LHT28 Posted April 22, 2022 #2 Share Posted April 22, 2022 first research the ports to see what is accessible for you Look for private guides/tours that can accommodate your needs Also check this forum & list the ports others may have suggestions https://boards.cruisecritic.com/forum/114-disabled-cruise-travel/ The crew will help you off in port when the crew ramp is lower to the pier so be sure to check with your Butler he can arrange that you disembark via the crew exit where possible Enjoy
