Zuiderdam - possible quarantine disembarkation in Victoria

Zuiderdam is currently docked in Victoria. As I was having dinner in the Pinnacle Grill looking over the gangway I noticed what appears to be quarantine folks being disembarked here.

They stopped folks returning from shore for a couple minutes and an officer walked back on on the phone. A couple minutes later two people got off escorted by the officer and followed by someone from housekeeping with a red bucket and wiping down the handrail after them. All wearing at least one mask.

They stood off to the side by a car at the bottom of the gangway. Normal folks allowed to board again and then a few minutes later the process repeated. Looked like 6 or so total disembarked. A couple crew followed with a cart full of luggage.

Not sure if these are quarantine folks who live on Vancouver Island, or if everyone in quarantine was put off. The only announcement was the cruise director wished everyone leaving the ship today a safe trip home.

Some of the people got in the car with most of the luggage. Two of the people have been waiting about 10 minutes standing off to the side in the cold with no where to sit with all their luggage waiting for something (presumably the car to come back).

Is the ship northbound or southbound, and how many days in (or left) are there?

Getting from Victoria to anywhere else in quarantine status is a pain- a public ferry to Vancouver, a ferry (no car) to downtown Seattle, or a (small) plane. If the ship was headed for Vancouver or Seattle, it’s less than 12 hours (more like 4-7), with a headwind. If northbound, that’s a different story, but where did the ship sail out of?

We are on a 5 day coastal San Diego toVancouver (also sold as 14 day Mexico +coastal). The rest of us disembark in Vancouver tomorrow.

My hope would be they live on the island. I think they said half the passengers this cruise are Canadian. I would be extremely displeased to be put off in Victoria when we dock in 12 hours in Vancouver and would have a much easier time getting anywhere. Of course that would be absent a medical emergency, or if we were heading out and it would be many days before the opportunity to disembark again.

After about 20 minutes the car came back and got the last two people with their luggage.

I live on Vancouver Island, and if I was on a cruise that stopped in Victoria AND Vancouver I sure as hell would get off in Victoria. It would save me and my hubby over $100. in ferry charges. I'm sure if they were being taken off because of COVID, it more than likely would have happened much earlier in the day.

San Diego, to Mexican Coastal then San Diego to Vancouver.

seems like some folks boarded (less than 650 passengers) in San Diego to head to Alaska.

no idea if an American citizen can remain on board for Alaska.. why would you want to ?. But Canadians I understand must disembark in Victoria or Vancouver.

so complex with 2 countries and brand new situations

Thanks for the info!

The vehicle was driven by an official looking person and came out to the gangway so I presume that it was just a port vehicle taking them to customs.

Did HAL give you the option of putting you somewhere for quarantine or are you on your own to figure it out?

We only docked around 4:30.

It would make sense to get off if you live on Vancouver Island for sure regardless of covid status, but particularly if positive. Taking a public ferry and maintaining quarantine would not be a fun experience.

It is a very interesting cruise indeed with multiple people on and off in different places. I was one of the 200 or so that got on in San Diego, but I know a large number are staying on from Mexico and on to Alaska, not sure how many though or if they all had to be US citizens to book that itinerary. I am sure someone has a lot of fun figuring out all the restrictions and requirements. Adding covid into the mix makes it even harder I am sure.

Canadian Federal Gov’t rules don’t allow for travel on any public transportation for 10 days after a positive test when arriving by cruise ship. So - getting home to Victoria from Vancouver is basically impossible. If a person was able to stay in their own car on an upper deck of the ferry - that might work.

Source: we’re currently in quarantine on the Koningsdam and will be sailing PAST Victoria to disembark in Vancouver Thursday. We need to isolate in a Vancouver hotel for five more days once we get off. We’re still waiting for details…
