tdnosnhoj11 Posted July 25, 2013 #201 Share Posted July 25, 2013 Looks like I may be increasing my goal if things keep going well! I haven't been running as much, but I did walk/run all 15 of those miles in the past three days. :D Miles ran/walked/biked- 71.12 Miles remaining- 53.88 Days remaining-
mandaleigh Posted August 7, 2013 #202 Share Posted August 7, 2013 Can I ask you runners a question? I started the C25k program 4 weeks ago and was doing great until I developed shin splints. I tried compression (ace bandages) while running but that made it worse. Iced after. I bought brand new sneakers just before starting the program. Any suggestions on helping my shins? I really want to run. Was loving it but this is frustrating! Oh... I run on a fancy treadmill with shocks underneath.

I actually have gone back to my old shoes the past few runs/walks I've done, and that's helped tremendously. These old shoes have been broken in and for some reason, I rarely get shin splints when I run in them anymore. When they were new, however, I did. And my new shoes, which were also recommended to me after a gait test (same brand as the old one), leave me hating my life when running. So maybe a really good, broken in shoe is what you need? tdnosnhoj11 Posted August 28, 2013 #207 Share Posted August 28, 2013 I've been really discouraged lately. I did a Biggest Loser deal at work that ended in April (I came in second!) I think during the time I was doing it, I pushed my knee/shins/feet a little too hard and they haven't come back from it yet. They're just NOT cooperating with my need to RUN!! And I hate walking on the treadmill, my finger itches to bump my speed up. So I've just been frustrated and haven't been doing much of anything lately. But here is my newest update, either way. Get thee to a running store like Fleet Feet and be professionally fitted for running shoes and inserts. It will be worth the cost and effort. I have terrible feet, but because of the professional fitting I have no problem running five miles every morning--and my pace gets better every week. My new goal is to qualify for Boston! You can also meet with a sports medicine doctor, trainer, or physical therapist and get some exercises that will help--strength building and stretching. Again worth the cost. If referred by your regular MD it will possibly be covered under insurance.
tdnosnhoj11 Posted October 18, 2013 #214 Share Posted October 18, 2013 Funny, I'm the only person who ever posts here, yet I still feel motivated to keep going! Anyway, I went to the doctor, she told me everything I already know, I'll have to rest ten days, take Aleve, and find some new stretches. I guess it's posterior shin splints. I'm looking in to buying equipment for Trigger Point Therapy, but it's not cheap, so it may be a Christmas gift  I'm going to start my "rest" regimen Wednesday, I've got a health screening that I need to lose a couple pounds for, and of course, running is what helps me to drop pounds the fastest. Even during my "rest" regimen, I'm still allowed to do other things, however, so I may be tacking on miles for the bike and elliptical. tdnosnhoj11 Posted October 22, 2013 #215 Share Posted October 22, 2013 Beginning tomorrow I will rest, since the doctor said I need to. I think I'll be able to walk/run those last 19.88 miles after the ten days of rest though, so I won't log for the bike or elliptical after all. We're doing a similar challenge, but a little different. We have a Hawaiian cruise planned in February. It departs out of SF. It just so happens there is a half marathon being run the day before. We have decided to train for the HM, run it, then recover on the ship. It will be my third HM, but my wife's first. With just over three months until the cruise I think our goal will be to run 300 miles, although we might push it to 350 just to make it more challenging prior to race day. ducklite Posted October 27, 2013 #217 Share Posted October 27, 2013 I have yet another injury. This time it seems that I have an inflamation of the acetabulum, the connective tissue between the femur and hip bone. I don't know what brought it on, and am hoping it was just the change of season. I'm in my second day of rest and it is feeling better. I won't have a chance to run again until Thursday due to work commitments, so hoping it will be fine by then. My groin pull is still niggling at me here and there, but overall is continuing to heal, and more of an annoyance or discomfort than pain. The 5x daily ham string stretches seem to be helping. I also have a scapula pain that feels like I slept on it weird, but It's three days running now and not really feeling better. The pain is no better or worse in any position or if I add weight, and I have a full range of motion. Kept me from yoga since Thursday, which tells you how much it's been bothering me. I'm going to a beginner class tonight just to get some mat time. I can do that class in my sleep, and can modify lunges as needed to not further injure myself. tdnosnhoj11 Posted November 4, 2013 #218 Share Posted November 4, 2013 If you post in a thread and no one else is there, does anyone hear you? Bahahaha! It's almost more of a personal accountability thing at this point! :p If I "think" someone might read it, I actually feel a little more motivated. My legs don't feel any better after my ten days of rest, four Aleve, two MSM, and two Glucosamine a day regimen. But I'm too stubborn to go back to the doctor when it's likely just muscle issues. I just ordered the Trigger Point performance starter kit. I'm sure I could have just found cheaper materials to have the same effect, but I know someone who swears by it, so I'll give it a shot! ducklite Posted November 4, 2013 #219 Share Posted November 4, 2013 My shoulder issue has fixed itself. My hip pain has not, and I have an appointment with the sports medicine specialist tomorrow morning. I have done a little yoga, but it definitely aggravates the injury. I did do an hour of weights this morning, omitted fly's in order to not aggravate the shoulder just in case. I feel fine but tired after not lifting for two weeks. ducklite Posted November 5, 2013 #220 Share Posted November 5, 2013 Turns out I have a stress fracture in the ishium--part of the lower hip structure. It has started to heal, which is good. My running has come to a screeching halt--forever. I can resume walking at 4 mph in a week, and 5+ mph in two weeks as long as the pain is gone. He encouraged me to strength train--but no lifting heavy, and to continue my yoga practice but modify all lunges and not do anything that causes pain in the hip area. Having just recovered from another running injury that took me out for two months, this is not good news. :(

Having just recovered from another running injury that took me out for two months, this is not good news. :( That IS bad news, I'm sorry to hear that! I almost threw a fit when my doctor told me not to run for ten days, I can't imagine longer. After my ten days of "rest," ("rest" means I was still walking at 3.5-4.0 mph almost daily lol) I actually took a little longer to get back into running again. I order the Trigger Point Therapy Starter Set, did that for a few days, then ran again Monday night. It significantly helped my shins, but my knee is still having a little trouble. Regardless, the 5K on Monday night was completed in 34 minutes and 19 seconds, not too shabby for my first time back in nearly three weeks! Miles ran/walked/biked- 199.54 Miles remaining- .46 Days remaining- 13 I'll be knocking that .46 out on my lunch break today. With 13 days left, maybe I should shoot for a total of 125 miles? We shall see!
tdnosnhoj11 Posted November 18, 2013 #222 Share Posted November 18, 2013 Miles ran/walked/biked- 209.44 Miles remaining- ZERO! Days remaining- 8 The anterior shin (I think) is in pain AGAIN. Back to the doctor after this cruise. I was going to attempt 225 miles, but that would be roughly two miles a day for the next eight days... that's hoping for a lot with the pain I'm in. So, until I'm better, so long forum thread!
ducklite Posted November 18, 2013 #223 Share Posted November 18, 2013 I still haven't done any walking, but practiced three hours if yoga yesterday. Hoping to do a mile with the dog after dinner tonight. :) Autocorrect responsible for most typos...
