Taxes on drinks when ported (Norwegian Epic Mediterranean Cruise)

We had for 4 days in a row ports of call in Spain and had to pay taxes while in port AND while sailing in Spanish waters. That was a twist that even the staff wasn't fully aware of.  By the 4th day in Spain, the Freestyle Daily had a mention about it: "Please be reminded that 10% tax will be added on food and beverage items while we are in Spanish water (up to 12 nautical miles)"

 

Was it just Spain, or all Europe ports/countries? We are on a TA in November with four Spain ports. This could end up being a fairly significant charge to our final bill that we weren't expecting.  So much for the "free" Premium beverage package. On the bright side, we didn't upgrade the beverage package...that could REALLY add up.

@schmoopie17 For our itinerary it was only the 4 days in Spain.  All other Europe stops did not charge the tax on alcohol.  But as others have said, on average, it is less than 1$ / drink.  Not a big deal if you consider all expenses for the cruise.

You haven't seen us drink...😁
