Is a passport required for US citizens on a close looped sailing from US?

Thanks everyone.  Did tons of reading.   I am in Michigan, one of the five states that you can get the enhanced right now.   My son already applied for his enhanced license and I will next week.  He said he only needed his BC.  I know the checklist has many items on it.   We will still take our birth certificates along, just for some overkill.

A regular drivers license (For picture ID) along with a certified copy of Birth Certificate is perfectly acceptable for closed loop cruises originating from a US port. I have cruised twice on MSC Seaside using these forms of ID and citizenship. Children under 16 do not need a picture ID...Certified BC is all they need.
