Food Allergy Kiddo

This is our first time cruising with a food allergy, tree nuts, and it’s severe enough that we carry an epi pen with us. Our doctor warned us that cross contamination would be her biggest worry, so I’m just wondering how the experience has been for others with food allergies. How do you handle the buffet or sending your allergy kiddo to camp ocean?

Depending on what family member or friend is sailing with us, upon booking we will tell our PVP of a food issue.  Years ago, after boarding, guests would have to seek out the Maitre-D to discuss this, but recently on the Dream, we were told to find the Menu Mate kiosk that was located in the buffet area near the Wok station.  The employees are there to guide guests through the daily menus for particular food allergies or sensitivities.  We ate most meals in the MDR and the servers there also helped confirm the following breakfast and dinner menu options.  Not sure about the cross-contamination issue for all food stations, but we were told and saw first-hand that the pizza station makes gluten-free pizzas in a separate area in the back to avoid cross-contamination with the other crusts.  Hope this helps.

The camps, for this very reason, do not feed the kids.

This, but keep in mind no way to control simple things like a kid in camp that ate nuts prior to going to camp and touches the same toy or game controller that your kid then picks up.  There will always be a risk of contamination from kids that are exposed to some kind of nut or even if they eat peanut butter related things and touch their mouth then a toy.  For this reason my SIL did not let my nephew (severe nut allergy) go to camps.  He of course was disappointed but we found other things to occupy him while cruising and it was better than the risk of close contact with other children.  No incidents and a great cruise!  Good Luck!
