Car rental Nawiliwili

Hi, we are considering booking a car for the day we will be on Kauai next month. I’ve found several car hire companies that have vehicles available but all pick ups seem to be from the airport, not from the cruise port. Anyone ever done this and is it easy to get from the port to the pick up place? Also any idea of the prices of taxis to do this? Thanks.

Lesley.

It is NOT easy to get to the airport unless they pick-up at the port. We used Avis (same shuttle bus as Budget) in Oct and had no problem.

Taxis are not expensive, but getting one is hard. The ship docks in Lihue, which has less than 10,000 people. The whole island only has 75,000. There are very limited numbers of cabs and Ubers. When we were there, the line for cabs at 9AM was about an hour long.

I'm sorry - a tad confused.  Are you saying that Avis/Budget had a shuttle at the port that took you to the airport to get your rented car?  Or did you have to take a taxi to the airport?

Avis/Budget, which is the same parent company, but separate counters, had a shuttle to the airport from the port when we were there a couple of months ago.

For Avis, did you need to call for the shuttle, or was it there at the cruise port waiting?  Any help would be welcome.

The Avis shuttle was there when we got off the ship. I think there was even a sign next to the shuttle location that said "Cars available".

The best beaches we hear are on the East side on kauai

The east has the worst beaches; strong currents make most of them unswimable. You ca n only swim at Lydgate because they have an enclosed breakwater. The South Shore (Poipu, Brennecke's, Salt Pond, etc) has the best year round beaches. The North Shore is great in Summer, but not Winter.
