Peak city Posted February 5, 2023 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2023 (edited) We are 2 seniors in our late 60s with Medicare and AARP United Healthcare. We will be leaving NJ, taking 2 flights to Fairbanks. Then 3 nights in Fairbanks before beginning our cruisetour with Princess. We have 6 days land then 7 days at sea to Vancouver. We will be in Vancouver 3 nights before taking 2 flights back to NJ. We currently have Allianz insurance though Alaska Air for the air portion of the trip. Wondering if we should take the insurance Princess offers, or if there is a better plan that will cover our entire trip - air/land/sea/land/air because of the extra days at beginning and end. Rare GeezerCouple Posted February 5, 2023 #2 Share Posted February 5, 2023 Depending upon your specific needs for travel insurance, we strongly recommend that you call www.TripInsuranceStore.com But *CALL* them. There are many choices, and if you have *just* made your first payment for the trip, please call them ASAP, as some of the choices are only available if you start the coverage within 10-20 days of the first payment (refundable or not); it depends upon your state of residence. There are many good policies still available, so don't worry if it's been longer (just remember for 'next time'). We learned about TIS here on CC almost 10 years ago, and thank goodness. They recommended a policy through Travel Insured, and at the last minute, we had a medical emergency and everything was cancelled, and nothing was refundable. We've since had several other claims, and all were paid promptly. TIS will help with claims if needed. Important: Keep ALL receipts in case you have a claim. The insurers require them, for obvious reasons. Try to keep it all as one policy, so there's no discontinuity in coverage. GC
klfrodo Posted February 5, 2023 #3 Share Posted February 5, 2023 What do you want to insure that is not covered by the Allianz policy that you purchased when you bought it from Alaska Airlines? According to their website it has cancellation, medical and dental, trip delay, etc. Trip Insurance - Alaska Airlines What more do you want? Medical? You're in Alaska. Alaska has great hospital. Medicare works just fine in Alaska. Medical evacuation? Coast guard gets you off the ship for free. Evac to a better hospital after your stabilized? A different policy from the medicare isn't going to change the risk or cost. I won't disagree with GC, however, I'm thinking one needs to have an understanding of their current insurance policies, know what they do and do not cover, and then make a more educated decision.
