stutz Posted March 10, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 10, 2006 We will be doing a Morning Montserrat tour in Barcelona post cruise. Wondering the following 1) Private or not...we are 6 going 2) drive up the mountain or "cog wheel" train"? 3) Tour provider recommendation Any comments well appreciated./ Mike
pinebro Posted March 11, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 11, 2006 We Took The Ships Tour To Monserrat. Kinda Long - But Beautiful Scenery. The Monastery Was Very Interesting, Heard The Boys Choir, Saw The Black Madonna ( This Is A Statue Behind The Altar, Not An Icon Painting Like In Poland). When You Are At Bottom Of Mountain Looking Up - You Can't Believe The Monastery Is Hanging On The Side Of A Cliff !! And The Road Up Is A White Knuckle Special !! Do Not Remember Much About The Cogtrain.

Which side of the bus is the best as far as the views are concerned? Thanks,
pinebro Posted March 16, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 16, 2006 Probably The Starboard Side. If They Did Not Change The Itinerary, You Go Up On A Different Road Than Down. The Up Road Is More Spectacular. Hope This Helps !!
cathi Posted March 16, 2006 #6 Share Posted March 16, 2006 You don't mention if you have an afernoon flight or are staying in Barcelona for an extra day. If you have a flight take the ship's tour- at least you'll make your flight!! If you are staying in Barcelona do it on your own!! Train from BCN and then cog train up the hill and reverse back. Not that expensive and well worth the trip!!! The views are incredible!
luvnorway Posted March 17, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 17, 2006 Cathi - we would like to go to Montserrat on our own when we are in Barcelona in May. Could you please tell me where the station for the Montserrat train is in Barcelona where you got off in Montserrat and also elaborate a bit on the "cog train" that you mentioned taking up the hill? Is it easy to find from where you get off the train? Any advice or assistance you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Mark_in_Colorado Posted March 17, 2006 #8 Share Posted March 17, 2006 The R5 line runs from the Espanya metro station to Manresa. You will either get off at Montserrat-Aeri for the cable car, or get off at Monistrol de Montserrat station for the rack railway. You can buy combo tickets that include the R5 train from Barcelona and either the cable car or the rack railway. Combo tickets are also available that include funiculars on Montserrat and even lunch at the top. At Montserrat-Aeri, the cable car is right there at the station, and I would assume the same is true for the rack railway at Monistrol. www.abadiamontserrat.net/html/eng/accesos.htm http://www.ricksteves.com/plan/destinations/spain/montserrat.htm

Andros Posted March 31, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 31, 2006 You can get to Montserrat easily on your own and less expensive! I have a homepage with a bunch of info on how to do this. Also, pictures of Montserrat, as we took well over 400 pics in the 4 hours we spent there. You can find this link in my signature. Pics will be in the Vacation/Cruise link and info on how to do it yourself in the Barcelona link on my homepage. Hope you have a great time in Barcelona and you will love Montserrat!
