Naples/Pompeii

Recommended Posts

We were interested in going to Pompeii. Any suggestions on traveling to Pompeii from Naples? Shore excursions on the ship are pricey and thought that taking a train ourselves might be easy. Thanks!

Pompeii is very doable on your own. If you search this board you will find lots of advice on getting there by train. The hardest part is getting to the train station itself. You could take a cab, but most cabs by the port want more than a trip to the station and are trying to get full day excursions out of people.

One way is to take the bus to the train station. You catch the bus right by the port in the middle of the road on the traffic island. You can get your ticket from the news vendor right across the road.

One other alternative would be to try Herculaneum. You can actually travel all the way there by bus from the same stop, again you get the ticket from the vendor. He speaks very good english so you should be OK there.

Both Herculaneum and pompeii are 10 euros admission and you can join a tour group at both for another 10 euros pp, or simply do it yourself.

Come back if you can't find further notes. It seems daft going through it all again when its been done in detail before.

perhaps you can find a few friends to share a taxi for the day.. they are lots at the port waiting to take you on all day tours.. works out alot less than a ship tour. Yes,you can get the train very inexpensive ofcourse...but be very careful about the schedule.. sometimes they will take you right to Pompei as their schedule.. and sometimes they do not run on schedule..on return..which could prove a nightmare..

Don't worry about the schedule. In our experience, the trains have always been on time and have never missed. Sure you will read of strikes, but these are always well advertised. As for going straight to Pompeii, then this must have been on the wrong train, as the train stops at Pompeii Scavi, right outside the gates to the site. As does the bus at Herculaneum.

Search back a year or so there was a great guide to doing Pompeii on your own that I printed out and used to get from the port to Pompeii. It was one of the best days we had! We spent nearly 6 hours in Pompeii and still managed to get back to the ship early enough for a swim before dinner. I think we spent about 60 E for the whole day (train/bus txts, entrance fees, audio guides, lunch for 2 people). The ship's tours only spend about 1 1/2 to 2 hours in Pompeii and that was not nearly enough time to see Pompeii. We hope to go back in a couple of years and see more plus spend some time at Herculaneum too. If you do the research don't be afraid to do it on your own!!!

Search for Luv to Travels' report that is titled "Going to the Med, Read This" which was just reposted within the last day or two. It has all the detail you need for your own Med tours. We used this for our tour from Naples to Pompeii last year. It is excellent.
