cindybeach Posted March 13, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 13, 2006 If any of you have a blackberry, does it work while you are sailing? Do you have to be close to port? This technology amazes me.

Navy_Chief Posted March 13, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 13, 2006 I believe that would depend on your provider. Mine is a company asset as I personnaly have no use for it, :) all it does is bother me (ahh the cost of working......too bad my navy retirement isn't enough for me not to work :) ). The good part is, I leave the office on my own time, off it goes.
AAAAmerican Posted March 13, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 13, 2006 You may have read that Microsoft as well now is bring a device like that out too. :) MSFT (MisFit) will probably be able to UpLink via the systems aboard the ships as well.. but as yyou saw on the New Noordam (IV) First Voyage there were problems ... so no guarantees on anything ...

As much as I turn it off after work and on weekends I still find myself drawn to turning it on now and then to check messages. I'm definitely leaving it behind when I go off on my Dec/06 cruise. I refuse to have the office follow me on vacation.
Navy_Chief Posted March 13, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Bramcruiser, are you booked on the Noordam Dec 6? Whats more annoying with the Blackberry is how you get swamped with e-mail as soon as you turn it back on:D
FoxyTerrier Posted March 13, 2006 #8 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Would they work in Europe? Thanks They will work in Europe, but call your carrier to make sure you have international roaming enabled.
FoxyTerrier Posted March 13, 2006 #9 Share Posted March 13, 2006 For those of you that do not want to be swamped with work emails while on board. Go into the filters and set it so you will only receive emails from the people you want (friends and family). I am an email admin and am in charge of our BlackBerry Enterprise server. If you need any help with this just ask me.
jhannah Posted March 13, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 13, 2006 Last year I had no service in Amsterdam, but had access in the British Isles. (The international service had to be activated, so call your IT department or provider.) I was able to use it quite a bit while we were at sea since we often were not all that far from shore. There were times I couldn't see shore but still had a signal.
