Trieste to Venice by train

Does anyone have any advice on traveling from Trieste to Venice by train.  I have been on the Italia Rail site, and I've also heard about how some tickets do not include a reservation, which is often needed.  What is the difference, and how do I know if I need one or not? I can go onto the website and purchase my ticket now (even though I don't need it for another 5 weeks), but do I need a reservation, as well, and how/when do I go about that.

Italia Rail is a reseller, deal directly with the train companies.

Both Trenitalia and Italotreno offer service on this route, check both to find the best combination of time and price for your trip.  When you purchase from the train operator you'll get everything you need with one purchase.

When you say you want a reservation,  do you mean for a specific seat or just a reservation for a specific departure time?

I took the train to Trieste last yr.. I had heard complaints about people standing the entire trip so I booked a FrecciaRossa train out of Venice Mestre station that didn't stop at venice Santa Lucia station and avoided the mess. Got a seat in business class, seat selection for under 20E.

There may be some confusion caused by rail passes, which are almost never a good economic decision in Italy.  For those, even with the pass, you must make a reservation for a seat-reserved train (IC, Frecce) and pay the reservation fee on top of the pass.
