A "must read" before going to Barcelona and a "must see" when you are there.

Recommended Posts

For those who have not read "Cathedral of the Sea" by Ildefonso Falcones and will be spending time in Barcelona, I highly recommend reading this book before you go. It is about the construction of a cathedral not far from the Ramblas. It was built solely with monies from the stone haulers, the craftsmen and fishermen of Barcelona and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. While a novel, it is based on fact. There was no money given by the Crown or the church and it was built in record time. From the outside the church is very nondescript, but once inside, it takes your breath away. I have visited twice and am awed by the stained glass and the light shining down on a statue of Mary, holding the infant and a boat at her feet.

Having read the book beforehand made seeing the church so much more inspiring.

The church is called Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar. It was built in the 14th century.

It is not a Cathedral.  Do not confuse it with the Cathedral of Barcelona in the Gothic Quarter which was built in the 13th century.
