The variety of Latin alphabet spellings of words - and especially places - in Greek, Arabic & other alphabets confuses me. Until I went there I thought Heraklion and Iraklion were two different places 🙄

Ah well, yes part of the problem is there are multiple ways to translate Greek (and I assume other cyrillic alphabet dependent languages) into Latin spellings. For example, the island of Chios, where my father is from, I have seen spelled as Chios, Khios, Hios and Xios.

 

The Thira-Fira thing took me a while to remember which is which.  What finally did it is remembering that I "fear-a" walking down the path to the port without stepping in mule droppings.
