Hello Everyone,

I have been looking for the following information and perhaps it's already mentioned somewhere in a previous post however I'm not very familiar with using the Cruise Critic site.

We will be in Amalfi on Oct 20th from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm and then Sorrento, Oct 21st from 7:30 am to 8:00 pm.

We have tried to book a private or group tour to tour the Amalfi coast from either of these locations but they all see to be booked ?

Also we would like to visit Pompeii, Capri, as well as spend some time in the towns of Amalfi and Sorrento themselves. Additionally many of the tours offer stops in either Amalfi and or Sorrento and we will already be there with Azamara. As we're travelling in October we have no interest in swimming and again many boat tours offer this option, also we have no desire to go to the Blue Grotto. We are a couple in our mid-sixties and are fit and can easily handle a full day tour but would prefer not to part of a big bus load of passengers. Would appreciate any recommendations you could send our way. Have reached out to the roll call but so far there's no planned excursions with the other passengers.

TIA

Sorrento itself is very pleasant, but IMHO unremarkable.

But Capri is very easy from Sorrento 🙂. About 20 crossings daily each-way, crossing time just 20 minutes.

Or take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Pompeii. Sorrento is the terminus station, Pompeii (station name Pompeii Scavi) is about 40 (?) minutes

But you'd be very hard-pressed to do both in one day.

There are also ferries to Capri from Amalfi, but much less frequent and longer crossing time.

But Positano is best-visited by ferry from Amalfi, because the harbour area is the heart of Positano 🙂.  Positano is on a steep slope, buses don't leave the main coast road high on the coast, and it's a long walk down (and seems even further back up) traffic can get clogged and on-spec. parking pretty-well impossible. Many tours - including ships' coaches which mention Positano only see Positano from that main road.

You might also have time to visit Ravello by local bus from Amalfi - glorious views from high.

If you're keen on a "tour" to Pompeii or along the Amalfi coast and are having difficulty finding one available, try googling "Sorrento taxi" and "Amalfi taxi". Both are suitable for driving the coast (doesn't need a guide) or visiting Pompeii (guides and - I think - audio-tours available at Pompeii altho that'd be poor value from a taxi).

  • 5 months later...

Interested to hear Capri is easy from Sorrento by ferry.....we are docked in Sorrento from 8am to 6pm in June and would love to go independently by ferry to Capri but nervous about missing the ship's departure time!  Can you book specific ferry seats/times and are they reliable?  Any ferry lines better than others?

Thanks!

Specific ferry time - yes (f you can't book the return time with your outbound ferry, do so when you arrive on Capri) .

Specific seats - I don't think so.
