What can you use onboard credit for?

I was lucky enough to get an onboard credit for a price drop on the Valor.

Has anyone had one? I leave a week Sunday and am hoping that they have record of it when we check in.

What can it be used for? Are there restrictions?? What about gratuities??

Anyone's experience with onboard credits would be appreciated!!

On board credit is just like having cash in your account, so if you have let's say a $100 credit the first $100 you spend on the ship for whatever, is free money!

You can use the On Board Credit for anything purchased on the ship (Excursions, drinks, tips).

The only difference between an onboard credit and a cash deposit, is that if you don't spend all your credit (not likely) they don't cut you a check at the end.

Anything that cost anything on the ship! Anything you can charge to your sail and sign account will go towards a onboard credit

So my question is this?? Do you have to tell them when you book the cruise that you have a ship board credit or do tell them when you board?? How do they know you have it? We have never recieved anything form Carnival except a phone call to cancel the cruise. They told us then that we had a $100 ship board credit per person.
