Roatan See & Snorkel Own Pace

;) Just a tip for those visiting Roatan. Don't be afraid to discover island on your own. Be sure to turn right out of the cruise ship docking gate for cabs that are cheapest and realiable. Ask to rent on for the day and you can visit many sites in the time you have. We go to West Bay beach area- same as ship excursion (Tabyana Beach) where swimming is great and snorkel a hundred yards out. Cab drivers know different resorts that welcome cruisers. Close by, ask driver to take you through West End town-lovely little shops and restaurants. We've been a couple of times on our own at Roatan and last week's trip was best- For $5.00 each, snorkelers can jump on the dive boat from the Luna Beach resort (West End) and take a 5 minute ride to the reef. Snorkel there for an hour and return to great food and drink at the resort restaurant and a super gift shop with items just about as reasonably priced and varied at the shops near the dock in Coxen Hole.

  • 5 weeks later...

The Luna Beach dive boat goes out at 9am, 11am and 1pm. They rent snorkel gear right at the dive office as well. If the dive boat is going somewhere too deep to snorkel, there is actually great snorkeling right off the beach at Luna. Go down to where the bridge is by the rocks and just snorkel out from there. I saw lots of lobster, fish, spiny shrimp and even an octopus there last week!

Food at Luna is also good and so are the drinks. You'll probably have Maria, Hiram or Jimmy behind the bar. Get a Monkey La La or if Hiram is working... try one of his Hiram Specials or a Wendy drink..

If you want to check out the nicer beach after that, just go out to the dock and flag down a water taxi and they'll take you to West Bay.

I just got back from two great weeks at Luna! Awesome place to stay and play!
