I remember when I was a kid you could go into the airport and go right up to the gate to see a family member off.

I remember one time my husband was allowed to come on board with me to help me get our two small children settled in their seats. Then he got off . That was about 1982. And before 9/11 anyone could go up to the gate, at least where I lived.   I remember international was different though. In 1999 I was not allowed to accompany my mother traveling abroad past a certain point in the airport. In June 2001 my daughter met me at the gate when I arrived at SFO. And then we know what happened and our world changed

Has anyone seen Bill miller on one of NCL's cruises?  He grew up in Hoboken NJ across from the NYC docks. He has become an expert on ocean liners and cruise ships.  I saw him at a lecture on the Queen Mary 2 .  It was so interesting!   I'd love to see him again.  One question I would ask is when did cruise lines stop allowing visitors to come on board ship prior to sailing?  A friend says her in-laws were still visiting cruise ships in port about 1980.  Anyone know?

We had the pleasure of sailing with Mr. Bill Miller on the ms Rotterdam VII on Holland America's 150 anniversary cruise:  April 2023  Ft. Lauderdale to NYC to Rotterdam Netherlands.  He is still fascinating with his daily lectures and very amenable to passengers sitting and talking with him.  It was a great cruise........sail on.!

That was the case as late as June 2001 in the US. I know because I flew out to San Francisco where my daughter met met *at the gate*.   But I think only pasengers were allowed past a certain point for international flights. Or else that might have been local.  I dropped my mother off at Logan in Boston long before 9/11 and I couldnt go to the gate.

It may depend on the airport, as recently as 2022, I was provided a pass to clear security and escort my wife to the gate, waiting with her until she boarded the aircraft. Although it was a domestic flight, it was an international airport.

I'm realize there are situations that deviate from the protocols in place but generally speaking, for people without extenuating circumstances, no one but a passenger with a boarding pass gets past security now.

That was my understanding, but I am proof that it depends on the airport. Smaller airports may be less rigorous, as I didn't even ask to escort her, they invited me.

June 2022, so long after 9/11.

That's very interesting.  Our local airport is an international airport but small and only ticketed passengers are allowed past a certain point.

Maybe it depends on the airport, but just a couple of months ago I brought my neighbor to the airport.  She needed "wheelchair assist".  I was the "assist".  I was given a gate pass at the check in counter.  Had to present ID and go through security like everyone else.  Sat at the gate with her until they boarded her.
