atonal1 Posted June 10, 2004 #1 Share Posted June 10, 2004 Just found out the price of the cruise I'm taking in August went down $80 p/p. I called Carnival and they offered to upgrade me to a cat 11, which I did not accept, as the cat 9A balcony is much better. I didn't ask about cat 12. Anyway, they gave me $100 shipboard credit. Should I have expected more? dms_cruisers04 Posted June 10, 2004 #2 Share Posted June 10, 2004 atonal, yes, I think you're entitled to a little more atleast. Your cruise price dropped $160 and you're only getting $100? Mike Family & Friends 1st time on the Destiny
mirrajay Posted June 10, 2004 #3 Share Posted June 10, 2004 From what I can see, on my ship anyway, Cat 11 is a Suite and 9A is just a balcony room. The cat 11 suite sells for $1000 more than the 9A... Carnival Victory, here I come!
dmfriedman Posted June 10, 2004 #4 Share Posted June 10, 2004 The cat 9A has a larger balcony than the cat 11 suite on most ships. Even though the room in the suite is larger, many people prefer the larger balcony size of the 9A. As for the $100 vs $160, my guess is that atonal1 has made the final payment already. Once final payment is made, Carnival's official policy (yes, I know there are exceptions) is that you don't get the cash refunded -- you're offered a shipboard credit or an upgrade, but the credit is rarely for the full value of the price difference.

Also known as Dave, who is Openly Addicted to Cruising! until I hop on my last-minute cruise choice -- the Carnival Spirit to Alaska! until I set sail on the Carnival Glory with O.A.T.C.! Sitmar Fairwind (7/87–Caribbean) ⊕ Sitmar Fairwind (12/88–Panama Canal) Carnival Sensation (8/00–Caribbean) ⊕ Grand Princess (5/01–Caribbean) Crystal Harmony (8/02–Alaska) ⊕ Carnival Conquest (9/03–Caribbean) Carnival Spirit (6/04–Alaska) ⊕ Carnival Glory (9/04–Caribbean) If's the ship is a-rockin'... atonal1 Posted June 10, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted June 10, 2004 Dave you are correct--I have made final payment. I just called about upgrading to cat 12 and they want $1200. I think not. LegalCat Posted June 11, 2004 #6 Share Posted June 11, 2004 I guess it depends on who you are dealing with. We booked directly through Carnival for our march Destiny Cruise. We made initial payment in mid-December and final payment whenever it was due I think in mid-January? 3 weeks AFTER making final payment I saw a drop of approx $35 p/p, not a lot but I figured it wouldnt hurt to ask, maybe they would give us a bottle of wine or some thing, lol... to my absolute shock, my PVP called me back and said that the price had actually gone down almost $200 per person and gave us a refund on the credit card! This was several weeks after final payment, i would have even taken an onboard credit or an upgrade (we were already in a cat 11 suite) but she just did the refund without even asking. Brian Zen Posted June 11, 2004 #9 Share Posted June 11, 2004 mirrajay and others- Just to clarify, on the Triumph and her class of ships, some of the 9A cabins are the aft corner cabins, which are highly sought after. On the Spirit class, the configuration is different, with the category 11 cabins on the aft corners. Atonal1, if you are in one of the aft corner cabins, you made a good choice, in my opinion. Good luck and have a great cruise! Brian Until Carnival Pride and the Mexican Riviera! cruise junky joan Posted June 11, 2004 #10 Share Posted June 11, 2004 Okay: I just checked on the price of the same catagory cabin I have, for the 7/10/04 sailing, for friends of ours only to see that the price has gone down 100.00 per person. I did not make our original reservations thru Carnival and this is not the agency that I booked my cruise thru. Should I call Carnival and see if they will do anything or call my agency and see if they will compensate me somehow or just forget it? Thanks For any help. LegalCat Posted June 12, 2004 #13 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Carnival will not help you with your booking if you did not book through them. You need to contact the person you booked through to see if they will give you a reduction or upgrade or credit of some kind. LegalCat Posted June 12, 2004 #14 Share Posted June 12, 2004 You can check all the time for a price drop, you never know. I use cruisesonly.com and also Carnival's website to check the prices. Depending on who you booked through, you can get multiple discounts. We deal directly with Carnival and they will give you a reduction every time with no penalty etc, so even if it were to go down $20 p/p we would still call. cruisinfanatic Posted June 12, 2004 #15 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Yes the balcony on the Cat 9a is larger, but the cat 11 is a suite. I think you're crazy for not taking this upgrade. atonal1 Posted June 12, 2004 Author #16 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Cruisinfanatic, I am a balcony fan, which is why I booked the 9A wrap-around. The cat 11 does not offer me enough to give up the wrap-around balcony. My cabin is 8433. Now, I'd jump at the chance for a cat. 12!! Check out Kristin's pictures of 8428--the balcony is HUGE!!!. With 3 sea days, I can enjoy my balcony without worrying about finding chairs on deck. As for checking price drops, I used Travelocity, then called my T/A when I noticed the price reduction. suzycruise Posted June 12, 2004 #17 Share Posted June 12, 2004 May I ask your advise? We booked "group rates" for 20 cabins on the 7/31/04 Glory cruise. We did not book through CARNIVAL but went through a cruise only agency who I have worked with before. On this cruise agencies website the rates have gone down by $100 per person for this sailing and in the categories we have booked. I have asked the cruise agency for a price adjustment, upgrade or cabin credit. Basically, they are offering nothing but a big, fat NO to all requests. The excuse being that 'CARNIVAL DOES NOT PROVIDE FOR REFUNDS AFTER THE FINAL PAYMENT". From what I have read on these posts it seems that it depends on the agency you chose to book with. I will appreciate any advise on how to go about being more assertive as I plan to continue to requests some type of price adjustment or upgrade from the agency. I also now know that I will NEVER USE THIS AGENCY AGAIN. Are we allowed to mention names here??? If so, will gladly do. Thanks.
LegalCat Posted June 12, 2004 #18 Share Posted June 12, 2004 Did you find out the policy of the agency before you booked with them? This is one example of makign sure you ask all the questions you will need to know before you decide on an agency. They are not required to give you a discount or any kind of credit or reduction or anything. I know people have been told BY carnival that carnival does not give anything after final payment, but we received a substantial credit (200 p/p) several weeks after final payment from our PVP. However, you may be out of luck,... is there a supervisor or owner you could appeal to? Maybe try to show them the importance of the size of your group and a discount now may do a lot to keep future business. cruise junky joan Posted June 13, 2004 #19 Share Posted June 13, 2004 We booked our cruise thru vacations to go and now Cruises only is offering it for 100.00 per person less than vacations to go. I haven't tried yet but I doubt that vacations to go will give me anything for the difference. Joan
Guest nhrich Posted June 13, 2004 #20 Share Posted June 13, 2004 Suzycruise, with Carnival it's a bit of a different policy with group rates. Carnival will decrease the price if there's a price drop, but you and the agent lose all group amenities (whatever, if anything you might be getting). Rich 12/94 Holland America Nieuw Amsterdam - W. atonal1 Posted June 13, 2004 Author #21 Share Posted June 13, 2004 When you check for price reductions, you have to check either Carnival, or a big on-line agency such as Travelocity. Remember, some on-line agencies sell for less by rebating part of their commissions. The only time you can get a price reduction is when CARNIVAL reduces the price. If Carnival reduces the price less than what the group paid, your T/A can ask (Carnival) for upgrades or on-board credit. Carnival does reserve the right to refuse, but make sure your T/A at least makes the call. suzycruise Posted June 13, 2004 #22 Share Posted June 13, 2004 Thank you for your responses. With this information Ifeel better equipped to fight for some type of price adjustment or upgrade. By the way, NO AMENITIES are being offered for our group cruise! I did not negotiate the thing I just signed up for it but now feel it is not such a deal after all. I think we would have all done better booking our cruises individually. Now that we are in the serious penalty phase (after final payment and within 60 days of cruise) we are stuck but much better informed for future cruise bookings. Thanks to all.
