Froggyflo Posted February 10 #1 Share Posted February 10 Hi, I'm looking for diamond stud earrings and I'm wondering if I'm netter off buying in Aruba or in Dubai... Dubai prices are good as far as gold is concerned, but we do have a 5% sales tax. I don't know about diamonds. Is there a sales tax in Aruba? Rare crewsweeper Posted February 10 #2 Share Posted February 10 Aruba is duty free. There are a number of jewelry stores on the island. No idea which is best or which are ripoff joints. But would recommend not even looking at Diamonds International or Tanzanite in the cruise port shopping of any Caribbean port.
Froggyflo Posted February 11 Author #3 Share Posted February 11 OK I think I'll buy at home then. Bargaining is also customary in Dubai and maybe as a resident they will offer me a better starting price.
Rare crewsweeper Posted February 11 #4 Share Posted February 11 Unless there's a timeline when you need to purchase, you might want to scout a few Aruba stores and see if they have what you're looking for and if it is comparable to Dubai.
Hatteras51 Posted February 13 #5 Share Posted February 13 Aruba has excellent, very reputable jewelry stores. I've purchased several pieces, and they've all appraised for more than I've paid. I'm in Aruba now, enjoying our timeshare weeks. My favorite jewelry stores are Kay's (not affiliated with Kay Jewelers in the U.S.), and Gold Palace. They are located on the right hand side of the road, just passed the cruise terminal. Definitely check them out when you stop in Aruba.
Froggyflo Posted February 28 Author #6 Share Posted February 28 Thank you so much for your advices! I will definitely visit these stores and maybe check on the prices at home before leaving!
suech1970 Posted March 5 #7 Share Posted March 5 I’ve had a very nice pair of diamond studs from Gemini jewellers next to the Royal Plaza Mall. Sales guy very honest, actually recommended the smaller pair for my ears, not many people would have done this. Also had some nice pieces out of Shivas Gold & Gems. I try and avoid Effy and Diamonds international. Always think they’re overpriced. I always have a rough idea of price at home and barter hard. Haven’t bought jewellery at home for years, save my money for Caribbean now. Happy shopping😉
MELSMOM47 Posted March 10 #8 Share Posted March 10 I was just in the Caribbean and heard stories about getting home and being told the items didn’t appraise. Scared me off buying 😟
Froggyflo Posted March 17 Author #9 Share Posted March 17 It's very difficult tp know what is a good bargain and what is not. Il suppose the most important thing is that we like what we've bought
ecs66 Posted May 30 #10 Share Posted May 30 Years ago ('80s), I bought a Rado watch in Martinique. When we got back to Ft. Lauderdale the same watch at (I think) Saks Fifth Avenue was twice as much. Generally, though, I think I'd stick with Grand Cayman for good quality jewelry, etc. But I'm not an expert.
