How difficult is it to fly from Auckland to Melbourne after arriving in Auckland from the US?

Even if you are in transit in Auckland on your way to Melbourne, you will still need that NZ visa for when you disembark at the end if the cruise.

That $1100 you save will pay for a couple of nights in an Auckland hotel before the long flight home, plus you get to pick the flights you want.

Also a good idea- similar concept but for some reason round trip to Melbourne is more expensive than to Auckland.

I think that reason would be distance - you'd more or less fly back over Auckland on your way  from Melbourne to the States.  At a very rough guess, without the time to look it up I'd say that option would add 5-6+ hours flying time.
