Dover port questions

 Share

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Cruising from Dover in about 6 weeks. Arriving early morning of the cruise via a train from London (after spending 4 days there). Was hoping there was a convenience store/grocery store either close to the port or close to the Dover train station? Would prefer to get a case of soda and some wine there vs. lugging it from London. Another option is if there is a store close to the Dover Castle. Planning to drop our stuff and go to the castle for 2-3 hours.

I assume taxis are easy to catch from the port and from the castle? Roughly what should this cost each way for 2 people?

There are no stores at the port area.  But the train station is in town, so it would make sense to simply ask your taxi driver to stop at a market, for a few minutes, so you can shop on your way to the port.  Town is close to the port (within a mile).  Can't help with the taxi cost as we just walk and use the local bus, when we go up to the castle.

Oh there's a bus stop close to the port that goes to the castle?

It has been a few years. but I believe we caught that bus from downtown.  DW and I have no problem walking between the port and town, but I think there is also some kind of shuttle bus (not sure if its free or has a fee).   As to taxis at the port, I recall a few taxis but, like anywhere, it is a bit of luck if a taxi happens to be waiting when you need it.  Obviously, if you are trying to deal with a time issue, getting a taxi from the port up to the castle makes a lot of sense.

No direct bus service. A fair walk to the main road, bus to town centre (Pencester Road) and another from there to near the castle. Then a steep uphill walk to the castle entrance.

A taxi makes a great deal of sense

The only places en-route from the station to the cruise port where you might get a very limited selection and not-the-best prices are a couple of gas stations. Nearest supermarket  (ASDA) where you'd get a decent selection and keen prices adds 10 minutes to the drive plus waiting time - which would negate the savings.

Best to buy while you're in London

JB 🙂.

Use the drive to the castle to decide if you'd be happy to walk back.

If not, fix with the driver for him or a colleague to collect you at an agreed time & place.
