They are not mosquitos (flies) and do not bite but they can be irritating. They can also be found in Iceland. It is primarily luck whether you experience them or not, but some who did found the headnets helpful to wear.. We had these nets that we'd purchased for another trip just in case. My notes tell me that the average expected high in Nuuk was 46 and 54 in Nanortalik and Qaqortoq when we were there in late August. It can be very cold on the water, especially on a fast-moving boat, but it was pretty pleasant walking around town, especially when the sun was shining. We both had Northface 3 in 1 Triclimate jackets along with fleeces, gloves and hats. It was still cold enough with all of that to move inside the boat on the way back to the port when we did the Wildlife Safari in Nuuk. Giving a current update from a Volendam passenger which made it into port yesterday. Most of the folks coming back from there did have their nets on, so I suspect they got worse around the lake path.
