QM2 - cabin above shops

The other factor is that noise transmission on ships (generally) is downwards, where the floor is acting as a passive loudspeaker for vibrations to the space below that floor  - dragging chairs, joggers, musicians, mechanical equipment. It's less of a factor upwards since the roof of the shop, in this case, isn't going to be seeing much vibration or noise, in fact the air and shop roof will be more of a sound barrier.
