We will be on NCL Spirit and at port Nov. 20 11 a.m. - Nov. 21 4 p.m. at the Osaka/Kyoto cruise port.  I would like to tour the Fushini Inari Temple but I'm not sure/real confident about getting from the cruise port to Kyoto and the Temple.  Most tours I see (there's a great Hidden Hiking one I'd love to do) all start in Kyoto.  Any advice??  Thank you!

You will overnight stay in Osaka, so very easy to DIY. If you have a Japan IC card, then
no need to purchase ticket at each station. Fushini Inari opens 24 hours, but sunset will
be around 5:00pm in November

Osaka cruise terminal to Kyoto Fushini Inari: (2 travel routes)

ROUTE 1:
1. Ship will dock at Osaka Tempozan cruise terminal. Walk 5-7 min to Chuo Line metro Osakako Station. Ride 2 stops to Bentencho station, take EXIT 4 to JR Bentencho station Osaka Loop Line.
2. Take Osaka Loop Line (3 stops) to Osaka station. In Osaka station, Osaka Loop Line is Platform 1 and 2 on 2/FL, exit the train, take escalator up to 3/FL, walk to platform 7 and 8 area and take escalator down to 2/FL platform  transfer to Tokaido-Sanyo Line.
Note: If follow Google map suggesting take metro Midosuji Line to Osaka station, will be a disaster for foreign travelers because the station layout is a maze. Osaka Loop Line and Tokaido-Sanyo Line are JR lines, so is a platform transfer, not a gate transfer.
3. Ride the Special Rapid or Rapid train to Kyoto in 30 or 40 min. If take a normal train will be a snail scenic ride to Kyoto.
4. Will arrive Kyoto station on Platform 4 & 5, take escalator up to 2/FL, another platform transfer to Platform 8, 9 and 10 for Nara Line.
5. Take Nara Line, 2 stops, 5 min journey to Inari Station. Will see a Great Torii close to the station, walk 3 min to the Shrine entrance (FREE admission). The single trip will cost you ¥1,300, Plan 90-120 min travel time from Osakako station to Inari Shrine.

ROUTE 2:
1. Walk 5-7 min to Chuo Line metro Osakako Station. Transfer at Hommachi Station to Midosuji Line to Yodoyabashi station. 20 min travel.
2. Take the Keihan Main Line Limited Express to Tambabashi Station (KH01 - KH 30) in 40 min and transfer Keihan Main Line Sub Expres to Fushimi-Inari station (Keihan Line) in 10 min.
3. If take the direct train without transfer is a normal train, 80 min to Fushimi-Inari station.
4. The cost is ¥290 + ¥420 = ¥710.  Plan 90 min travel time from Osakako station to Fushimi-Inari station.

Fushimi-Inari station is further away from Inari Shrine, about 8 min walking distance

Most cruisers will travel to Kyoto using ROUE 1. Because your destination is Inari Shrine, so
taking ROUTE 2 will save you time and money.

If possible bring a power LED flash light to navigate after dark.

We would add that the Inari Shrine is worth the trip :).  Since you are overnighting in Osaka, you might want to consider spending the night at a Ryokan or Hotel in Kyoto.  That gives you the better part of 2 days in Kyoto, which is a city worthy of more time for anyone interested in Shrines and Temples   That would also make it possible to enjoy a nice dinner in Kyoto.  One can make a good case to go to a restaurant that specializes in the best Kobe Beef :).

Hi @monkey@cruise it's me again lol.  We are also planning to for Fushimi-Inari Shrine to be our first stop in Kyoto on our DIY (Millennium Oct 9-10 port of call). Does #3 mean there is a direct train from Osakako Station?  I am a little confused.

Thanks...Debbie

No direct transport from Osakako metro station to Fushimi-Inari JR train station !
You take the metro from Osakako station to Yodoyabashi station.
Take EXIT 2 to Keihan Main Line Yodoyabashi Station.

From Keihan Line Yodoyabashi Station: Either #1) Direct train to Fushimi-Inari station, only semi/sub express train (ends at Demachiyanagi) stops at Fushimi-Inari(Keihan Line) station, 80 min travel.
or #2) Take Limited Express (ends at Demachiyanagi) or Rapid Express (ends at Demachiyanagi) train to Tambabashi Station, reboard a semi/sub express train (ends at Demachiyanagi) to Fushimi-Inari station, 50 min travel time.

The direct train stops at many stations, so the #2 travel method is ride a later express train to catch up an early direct train at Tambabashi station, to minimize travel time.

Direct train from Yodoyabashi to Fushimi-Inari station timetable on 9th Oct.

Thank you for explaining this more thoroughly.  I have taken a screen shot of this to save on my phone.  I think you'll be happy when I finally board the ship this week and stop asking so many questions 😂.  I can't thank you enough for all the details you have posted on Cruise Critic!

You will be a Japan travel guru after this. Different types of train run in Japan: Express; Limited Express; Rapid; Local; Semi-express, you need to know to make your train travel easier. In general, I wouldn't post the travel options in details unless someone request them.  I will board the Apex in late October on TA cruise, then no time to answer Japan travel questions.  🤪

"Konnichiwa".  Enjoy your Japanese cruise, weather in October won't be as hot in August. Japan is a wonderful country and you will love to visit again.

More tips on riding Japanese train.
Tambabashi Station is 2 miles south of Fushimi-Inari Station. Not all trains do station stop announcement in English, and English signages are small.  If you don't have live internet access or google map, do take notes on number of stops and write station name in Japanese for assistance if needed.

Yodoyabashi Station: 淀屋橋駅

Tambabashi Station: 丹波橋駅

Fushimi-Inari Station: 伏見稲荷駅

Anyone know any tours or guides that meet you at the port and escort you to Kyoto and then bring you back the next day.  Would love to overnight in Kyoto at a Ryokan.  But a little intimidated to travel by ourselves.
