You'll have a great time in Zadar. If your ship is smallish you'll dock at the new dock at the head of town - it takes around 30 minutes to walk through the old town. You'll be docked beside the sea organ. This makes organ sounds as the waves go in and out. Don't miss the fish market. Cruise liners are still quite new to this area, and you may find a lot of people coming out to see and even touch the ship. Silver Wind last year was in the local papers and hundreds of locals had their pictures taken beside the ship. The town is small, old and scenic, but the new town is across an interesting new bridge. The new town isn't really worth bothering with but the old town is a strolling place and wonderful.

The Sea Organ, you'll dock right beside it.

Jeff - Thank you SO MUCH for the information and the wonderful pictures. We will plan to just walk around and try to take some great pictures. it looks like a very scenic spot. We really enjoyed your pictures and are looking forward to seeing the Sea Organ for ourselves. It is fun to know that the town looks forward to the cruise ship arrivals.

........ hasten to add, not MY pictures, I was just hunting for a pic of the sea organ for you and found them. The sea organ is one of the most magical things. It says much for these people that they commissioned it and it is so wonderful. People just walk along there and sit and listen and watch the boats. Ferries and boats purposefully sail past to set off the organ notes, It really is a strolling area, no rush or stress but absoltely clear air and venetian archiatecture in an unspoilt area. If you go into the fish market, then the local speciality is salt fish. They'll let you try some - so do - it's an unforgettable experience.

Zadar is a real gem and a real suprise.

Being a Croatian, living in Croatia I suggest you stay in the old part of the town, and do what we do on holidays in Zadar: sit in a caffees, do some people watching, than change a spot and do the same. The church St. Donat and the treasury chamber are worth the visit inside, other than that Zadar is more an experience of strolling through the streets (like ST. Paul de Vence near Nice or Aix a Provance near Marsellies if you are familiar). I am not sure how long your ship will be docked but if it is more than a day take an excursion to Plitvice lakes and waterfalls.

Oh, if you are going to shopp, I suggest the olive oil and natural cosmetics (soaps etc) made from olive oil.

Lana13 Thank you so much for your reply. It is so helpful to hear from people who have been to a port. We will plan to stroll and sit and take in the town. We have been to St. Paul de Vence and know what you mean.We have also been to Split and Zadar sounds similar. There we strolled and sat too. Is it similar? The ship is only there for a day. They may have an excursion to the Plitvice lakes and waterfalls. Is that a half day trip? If so we may be able to go there and then return to the Old Town. Thanks again for the info.

Hi Lana,

My wife and I are coming to your country, but I know that the majority of the ship will in the town of Dubrovnik and with the rest of the tourists from Europe, so we were wondering about going to the Peljesac Peninsula and enjoy the wineries and local food there, can you please offer us some advice. Thank you.....Dennis

Is there is a half day trip to Plitvice from Zadar,

http://www.pbase.com/tibofo/plitvice

you can make it but i guess it will be exhausting (and do not think about it at all if it is Friday, saturday or Sunday in July or August bacause half of the Germans, Austrian , Hungarians and many many more will be on that highway those days. For central Zadar (old town) you nedd 2-3 hours so see if there are excursions that would leave you those hours to spend in Zadar. Other beautiful excursion from Zadar is Kornati islands, it is with a boat from Zadar.

Regardnig Peljesac peninsula form Dubrovnik. It is a 45 min drive . The buses would be very cheap but also depend on traffic. Try to organise private transfer on

Organized tour would be nice but if you are going to get a private tour go to the village: MALI STON (see photo)

and reserve a lunch in a restoran KAPETANOVA KUCA (Captain`s house) that is one of the best in Croatia. http://www.ostrea.hr/
