Vancouver Info if needed

Recommended Posts

We are driving from Ft Worth Tx to Vancouver (via Napa Valley & Redwoods) to catch the May 22 Zuiderdam cruise. Are there any nice places near the port (I guess) to stay and leave my car vs port parking?

With extremely high land cost in the downtown area of Vancouver hotel parking is very expensive, upwards of $20 p/n which makes it about the same if not slightly more expensive then the parking at Canada Place. If you want to stay our in the 'burbs there are some nice motel type properties that do offer stay, park & cruise packages; one that leaps to mind is Accent Inns who operate a motor inn in both Richmond (near the airport) and in Burnaby (a 'burb abuting Vancouver to the east) link The is a Coast Hotel in Vancouver's West End which abuts the downtown core to the west that sometimes offers packages to cruisers link Failing the above I would be bidding for a room on Priceline in the downtown area at 3*+ and start bidding at about $150, I think you will be amazed with what you will come up with this year.

PD - just a remainder that the Coast Hotel on Denman is scheduled to close sometime in the future and be converted into rental apartments so that option may no longer apply.

I also heard from a friend who is a member of the health club at the Pacific Palisades on Robson that it and the hotel will be closing April 30 to be knock down for a condo project so that we might have to knock that one off our list.

Have a very Happy 2010 and in case I forget a wonderful cruise on Princess.

Cheers

Hey UT, Thanks for the Heads Up on both of those, while I read the Sun daily online it is not the same as having the paper edition so things are easily missed.

Happy New Year to you as well.

We will be heading up to LAS on 1/12 and flying to FLL the next day....you can stay at some of the casino/hotlels and leave your car for free which a lot less then paying for parking at McCarin for 16 days. We will have a full day in FLL before boarding on the 15th.

So it is time to get those Christmas decs down and start packing.:)

Hey UT, in some casual surfing the other night I see that Coast is about to open a new hotel at 1180 E. Hastings. At first I thought that it was a re-flaging of the Renaissance as I know it has new owners and there was a thought that may be new managers but no it is a brand new property. I just wonder where all the people are going to come from this summer to fill them. link

There was a story on the news about that new Coast - I guess the employees at the Denman location felt they should automatically get jobs at the new location but I don't think any of them were offered anything.

This new Coast is right next door to the Marriott and a short block to the Trade and Convention center.

Don't forget that the new Fairmont Pacific Rim is set to open later this month but the last time I was by there - about a week ago - looks to be a fair amount of work to do so it should be interesting to see if they can meet their Olympic deadline.

Another good solid Canucks performance and what an upset in Junior hockey.

Cheers

I missed the story re Coast and the employees...was it in the paper or on TV, we watch Global...that's what DW likes? I doubt the the closing of the one and the opening of the other coincide so that could have been an issue as I always thought Coast was pretty good with their employees....but it could be a union issue.

Yes the new Fairmont is going to be pretty spectactular. I would think that it's focus will be convention business but it surely it will impact the Pan Pacific and their Waterfront Hotel....even in cruise season. I still wonder where all the folks are gong to come from to fill all of these rooms...I guess it is the convention centre....I have a friend who is pretty tuned into the hotel biz someday I will pick up the phone and ask him what's up.

We have to be pretty happy with the Canucks, that was a very good roady....even got a "looser" point out of it but that western confernce is tight. Happened to watch the Coyote game on Fox Sports-AZ (wasn't going to pay to watch it)...well the way the announers called it you wouldn't have thought there was another team (Canucks) on the ice besides the Coyotes, it's a huge sell job down here. And yes that was quite and upset with the Swiss beating the Russians....but didn't the Canadians have trouble with the Swiss last year?

Well it's midnight here and its golf in the morning and then got to finish taking down the outside Christmas lights and yard decorations...then get on cruise planing...we go up to LAS on the 12th and fly to FLL on the 13th.

That story about the Coast employees is many months old - perhaps even before you went south - whether it is a union matter or the fact that you are going from what a 3 *** hotel to one that wants to be a 4 or 5 ***** might have more to it or perhaps there are different management companies involved.

I haven't watch Global news for some time - prefer CTV as I know one of there senior on air assignment reporters.

Cheers

Well I get my coffee and bun at the same Starbucks in Sechelt as Bill Good does.... and I often see him in his beemer convertable around town....and DW was a TA where his kids went to school in North Van.....but DW doesn't like Pamila Martin....so we watch Global. Actually for a weekend resident of the Coast (he has a fabulous home and guest house on the beach at the Creek) he does a great deal for the community often MC-ing charity events and alike....very highly thought of.

Are these hotels all fairly close to the port: Hyatt Regency, Marriott Renaissance, and LaQuinta? Any other good hotels near the port?

All of the the hotels you have named with the exception of LaQuinta are within about 2 or so blocks of Canada Place and within 1 mile or so of Ballantyne Pier. Other hotels at or close to Canada Place would include the Pan Pacific, Fairmonts Waterfront Hotel, Fairmont's Pacific Rim and Coasts Coal Harbour...the latter two will not be open for about a month. Another one would be the Tower at the Terminal City Club. As Ballantyne Pier is an a rather seedy industrial area there are no hotels close by. Come back if you need some more names.:)

There are dozens of hotels in the downtown core, and two different cruise ports. I would suggest looking at a map of various hotels and comparing their locations to the Canada Place and Ballantyne Piers, after verifying where your ship leaves from;

Four of us who post on this forum are Optometrists....it helps with out billings.:)

I think the Coast Hotel people may be having trouble with their site, I can't get into the Coast - Plaza or the Coast's corporate site...maybe try again latter. I can't even give you a toll free line to call.

Long two days of Olympic volunteer training completed - now just need to wait for my assignment for the Paralympics at Whistler.

Might just crack open a beer and watch the remainder of the hockey game.

Cheers
