Take them, use them and enjoy your vacation. We use them, considerately and find them too be great for keepiong track of each other.

Unfortunately you don't need a walkie talkie to be a rude and inconsiderate passanger. Lots of people seem to be able to do that without equiptment. Let's leave them at home!

My advice is to leave them home please!...very anoying to your fellow passengers and thank god they don't rent them onboard! You can esily keep in touch on the ship by meal times or activity times as a reference.

...For those who are opinionated enough to tell others to leave their radios at home, might I suggest, once again, that you learn to differentiate between the tool and the abuser. I have far more complaints about inconsiderate drunks than you will ever have about walkie talkie users, but I don't think that justifies having Princess discontinue alcohol service now does it?
All very well put. :)

And thanks for the FRS vs. GMRS info.

Here we go again. Okay I'm game.

Maybe Terre could start the Terre Cruise Line and Terre could tell everyone what they can and can not do. Of coarse Terre would never get the ship out of port because Terre would have to use a two way radio.

My daughter and I love to make fun of the "Walkie Talkie" people at buffets or the pizza and burger place.

Example: After waiting in line for a few minutes, dumb kid with walkie talkie makes contact with fat ass parents too lazy to come down with them. Cruise line employee - "Hamburger or cheeseburger?"

Dumb Kid - "Hang on". Calls parents. "Hamburger or cheeseburger. Over."

Parents - "Billy, is that you?"

Dumb Kid - "Yeah. Hamburger or cheeseburger!?"

Parents - "Cheeseburger - no onion, no mustard, mayo only."

Dumb Kid - "What?"

Parents - "Cheeseburger - no onion, no mustard, mayo only."

Cruise line employee - "There's no mayo. Only mustard and ketchup."

Dumb Kid - "No mayo. Only mustard and ketchup."

Line growing exponentially. People in line want to dump kid and his walkie talkie in the Gulf of Mexico.

Parent - "Man. Can you get packets of mayo from the Horizon Grill?"

Dumb Kid - "Where's that? Over."

Parent - "It's where we ate breakfast."

And on and on and on.

Dump the walkie talkies. Figure out times to get together instead. And get your own big behind in line and order your own food.

Thanks for listening.

My sympathies to anyone who's had to put up with this kind of inconsiderate foolishness. I'd be just as annoyed as anyone else at this sort of [mis]usage of walkie-talkies.

As sad and unfortunately as this scenario is, however, this is not an argument that demonstrates that walkie-talkies are bad. This is an argument that demonstrates that walkie-talkies can be used poorly. And inconsiderately. And hopelessly and utterly cluelessly.

Any tool, no matter how good or useful when used appropriately, can be made into something annoying or dangerous when used foolishly. (I see this sad phenomenon all the time in everyday work. :()

The plea, IMO, shouldn't be "leave the walkie-talkies at home." It should, IMO, be "bring your brain and a sense of consideration-of-others with you."

I used them once about 7 years ago. I can see they have a use.,,Just didn't like feeling "tethered" to anything while relaxing. and the first time my then 11 year old daughter couldn't reach me on it she panicked..so that was the end of those!!..The "sticky" notes left on a door/dresser mirror and a "designated" let's meet for lunch etc etc at a certain location at such and such a time seems more practical..At least it works better for me...Just my opinion..

My DH and I cruise and or travel often and always bring ours with us. We are on the mind set that they are for quick information purposes or if the guys go off and do one excursion and we girls do another we use them to meet up when we each are done. We are also on the mind set to be curtious, considerate and set on vibrate so not to annoy or disrupt others around.

We tried the "cheap" walkie-talkies once on the Golden a few years back when my SO's parents were on the ship with us. There were very few places on the ship that they would work and even when they did, the reception was terrible so we gave up on them.

I think those that said to go with the more expensive ones are probably onto something. If we ever sail with other people again we'll probably buy the more expensive ones. Oh, and we'll do our very best to be considerate also.

I agree that when used improperly the walkie-talkies can be very annoying. However, when used properly they can be a useful tool. We took ours with us on the Crown 8/25. We always carried them but they were only used for one purpose. My son has a breathing condition and if he needed help he could get in touch with us.

For those who say leave the radios at home, here is an example. One night my son was in the teen center and had an episode. The staff immediately called the doctor and he was taken to the medical center. The medical center tried to call us but they called the wrong cabin (we had two), then we were paged. Guess what you can't hear the pages in the showroom, disco or casino. No idea he was in trouble. However our walkie talkie started vibrating and kept vibrating - no talking. Well, vibrating no talking must be our son. Run up to teen center and they let us know what happen so down to medical center. How long would it have taken to contact us if we didn't have the radios?

I will use them again for this purpose. But we also use regular meeting times, cabin phones and stickies for non emergency communication.
