Ball gowns vs. below-knee dresses for formal on QM2 Mediterranean

I will be on the QM2 in the Queen's Grill for the June cruise in the Mediterranean. For formal nights, is a ball gown de rigeur, or would a black designer dress cut to below the knee suffice? I am planning on perhaps 2 to 3 ball gowns, but might want to wear a shorter black dress one evening. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I know that the official dress code specifies that "formal" can include "cocktail dresses," but I don't want to be out of place.

JetSetJen, welcome. I see that you are new to Cruise Critic. There is so much to be learned on this site. I have not sailed on a QM2 Med cruise but I have been on the QM2 twice. I think the black dress you describe would be fine for formal nights. Since you are taking several ball gowns wear one of them the first formal night and see what others are wearing. Then make a decision about the shorter dress. Remember, that Cunard also has informal nights and the black dress would be perfect for those nights. Enjoy the QM2.
