My wife and i will be in San Francisco for a day and a half , While we are on a cruise coming back from Alaska, Is it possible to get the ferry to Sausalito and Tiburon or do you have to take two journeys.

If we only go to one which do you recommend

Thanks

There is no direct ferry service between Sausalito and Tiburon so you would need to take 2 ferry roundtrips (...or take 2 buses to get from Sausalito to Tiburon -- no direct bus either).

If you only have time for one, I vote for Sausalito.

Tiburon is nice but Sausalito has more places to explore for the first timer wanting to see the sights. I also prefer the historical aspects of Sausalito.

If you decide on Sausalito, you might find some of the links below helpful.

Also for Sausalito:

  • If you have time and like science/environmental studies, the Bay Model Visitor Center is worth a visit -- 1 mile away from the terminal, along Bridgeway.
    .
  • If you want a restaurant recommendation, my favorite restaurant in all of Marin (and one of my favorites in the Bay Area) is the much beloved Buckeye Roadhouse -- one of the best local examples of the casual California style with grilled meats. Extremely popular for brunch although all meals there are great. (A 3 mile walk from the terminal - 2 miles past the Bay Model on Bridgeway to Shoreline Highway just inside the border of Mill Valley. So unless you're a walker and have time, it would be a short taxi or bus ride.)

Enjoy your cruise and your visit,

Thanks for those links, I will be in the Oakland area this weekend, (DH on business trip) and will have some free time by myself. Since you are a local do you have any suggestions. Also, any suggestions for great restuarant, can be in San Franciso, Napa, etc as we have transportation.

My top suggestions are for San Francisco, see below after these Oakland/Berkeley recommendations.

If you'll be in Oakland/Berkeley:

Berkeley Bowl Marketplace (a supermarket renowned for its produce, internationally)

The produce section is what California is all about.

Chez Panisse:

Lunch/Dinner (Saturday, not open on Sunday)

If you haven't been to Alice Waters' Chez Panisse, this is one of the top musts for the devotees of California Cuisine.

Reservations recommended for the Upstairs Cafe;

the restaurant downstairs is open for dinner but usually is booked weeks in advance.

Website:

Walk around Berkeley' Gourmet Ghetto

Note: The Live Oak Park Fair is nearby this weekend.

Berkeley:

35th Annual Live Oak Park Fair

Sat 6/10/2006 - Sun 6/11/2006

10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Live Oak Park , 1300 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley, CA

With 125 booths featuring original arts and crafts, live jazz, food, comedy, magic and family activities.

Artists and craftsmakers offer a wide array of original work: handcrafted jewelry, weaving and wearables, woodware, painting, printmaking and photographic prints, glassware, pottery, ceramic sculpture and always many things outside the usual.

If you'll be in San Francisco:

The Ferry Plaza Farmers Market (Saturday) is one of the top musts. Go here before you go anywhere else in SF on Saturday. (Sunday is not as big.)

Saturday: 8am-2pm

Sunday: 10am-2pm (spring-fall)

The 2 biggest fairs/festivals this weekend are the Haight Street Fair and Fiesta Filipina. I recommend both. The Haight Street Fair for its only-in-San-Francisco atmosphere (but if you go it's Sunday only... -- go on the early side or maybe early in the afternoon). Fiesta Filipina especially for the great Filipino food (either Saturday or Sunday).

San Francisco:

29th Annual Haight Street Fair

Sun 6/11/2006

11:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Haight Street between Masonic and Stanyan streets

San Francisco, CA 94117 (Haight-Ashbury)

A free outdoor celebration of the diversity and history of the Haight with live entertainment on two stages and booths featuring food, arts and crafts and social service organizations.

San Francisco:

Fiesta Filipina

Sat 6/10/2006 - Sun 6/11/2006

10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Civic Center Plaza, San Francisco

The biggest Filipino Festival in America celebrates Independence Day Celebration with rides, traditional foods and crafts for sale and live entertainment.

San Francisco Restaurants:

Tadich Grill (not open Sunday)

(in the Financial District a couple of blocks from the Hyatt Regency)

Farallon

(1/2 block from Union Square)

Jardiniere

(Next to the Civic Center, behind the Opera House and Symphony Hall)

Other Dining Recommendations in the Bay Area:

There are many other things going on ALL around the Bay Area this weekend -- and of course many other places to see, but this is what I can get you for now. (I'll be out this weekend starting this morning, myself.)

[sorry I ran out of time otherwise I'd also give you Napa/Sonoma recs.]

Whatever you see and wherever you go, have a great time!

P.S. Last but not Least:

Make sure to visit Twin Peaks!
