If cell phone says roaming, can you text msg

We have Verizon and were told by them last week that even if we are roaming we won't get roaming charges to text msg. However I was reading on another thread that indicated that cell phones worked for much of the cruise but they were hit with huge cell bills even when it did not say roaming. Does it cost any more to text message than our usual 10 cents? I'm getting a lot of conflicting info and don't necessarily feel that I am getting completely accurate info from Verizon. We wanted to use our cells like walkie-talkies on the ship. Thanks!

I also have Verizon and can't get an answer on coverage for Alaska. I have called them and even went to the service center in person. And help from someone with experience using Verizon in Alaska would really help.
