Sailure Posted July 5, 2004 #76 Share Posted July 5, 2004
Why do smokers always cloud (no pun intended) the issue by bringing in issues that are so far removed from smoking? Fatty foods and overweight Americans have nothing to do with my right to breath fresh air. Unless a fat person steps on my foot or pushes me off the buffet line, they do not effect my life at all. The bottom line is, there is no worse anti-smoking advocate than a former smoker!
Hmmm, I guess for the same reason that people who smuggle booze on board and are told they're breaking the rules throw in the question about other people going over the speed limit or breaking some law that has nothing to do with the rule they're breaking. It's just one of those things.
Sailure Posted July 5, 2004 #77 Share Posted July 5, 2004
Hi Halos. (I'm one of those considerate smokers, I promise.):) We have similiar ordinances here, as well. I would never even think about throwing a butt out the car window or on a street. That IS disgusting, and I'm very anti-litter - as well as being on a 'coast beautification' committee. That is awful about those folks tossing their cigarettes into the lifeboat! (I hope you reported it to the purser!?) That is definitely a safety hazard. I'm sure those idiots had ashtrays in their cabin. Tossing cigarettes overboard is such a hazard. Anybody with any common sense should know that the wind could carry a lighted tossed cigarette onto another deck. That's downright scary! On deck, there are built-in ashtrays all along the outside walkways, so there's no reason to toss one overboard. How stupid of folks to do that.
Hey Cotton...those smokers who were doing that were probably drunk on the booze they smuggled onboard!:D
imsulin Posted July 5, 2004 #78 Share Posted July 5, 2004 Hmmmm - let's keep this the nice thread that it's been, OK? Thanks.
headhurt Posted July 5, 2004 #79 Share Posted July 5, 2004 Hmmm...makes sense to me. Smoking causes vasoconstriction, and raises your blood pressure...whether it be first or second hand smoke. I don't think smoking alone causes heart attacks unless there is some sort of underlying pathology, like heart disease or something of that nature. Smoking just sort of expedites that whole process...which is why the docs tell people not to smoke so many hours before a cardiac cath or stress test. Don't get me wrong, I don't smoke, and I don't think anyone else should either for their own health...but I don't think nonsmokers need to be barking at strangers who are smoking that their smoke is going to give everyone else in the room a heart attack. As far as the fast food fat debate. A greasy cheeseburger only hurt the person who eats it...as well as the nurse that has to take care of them later after they have had open heart surgery. :)
halos Posted July 5, 2004 #80 Share Posted July 5, 2004 I've been a very considerate non-smoker on this thread but I have to tell you that no matter WHAT hot-topic thread I read, nothing aggrivates me more than folks who like to make themselves feel better about their 'sin' by bringing up everyone else's. Someone else smuggling booze on board does not irritate my throat, cause my eyes to water stink up my hair and clothing, and YES affect MY health. When that day comes, I'll complain about that too. You smoke...that's great. But please be honest with yourself as to how disgusting a habit it is and how it certainly does affrect others. Nothing is worse than a person who defends this habit...especially by bringing up booze smuggling...how lame!
SallyMay Posted July 5, 2004 #81 Share Posted July 5, 2004 Well I have been around for awhile, lost quite a few numbers of my posts. Yea, once you look at it this is very civil. I have seen some of the other threads but just had to say something. I'll look forward to the jello shots - make mine strawberry. LOL:) :)

pholter Posted July 5, 2004 #84 Share Posted July 5, 2004 Jello Shots are such a DISGUSTING habit! :) One's disgusting habit may not be another's. I think there are several things alot more disgusting in public than smoking, but I'd hate to be accused of being "Lame" since it's not one person's opinion.... Everybody Light Up and be happy!!!! :) :)
sea-cruise Posted July 5, 2004 #85 Share Posted July 5, 2004 It took 17 tries before I finally quit smoking 15 years ago (DH quit 1st try). I might be nuts, but I don't care if friends smoke in front of me or not. Maybe I'm old and mellow...don't know. It bothers some and they can't help that if they can't breathe near it. I don't mind smoke, don't mind jello shots (never had one but would like to try), don't mind wine, etc. :p Let's get friendly & mellow. pholter Posted July 5, 2004 #88 Share Posted July 5, 2004 The beauty about the Cruise ship is that smoking will probably NEVER be illegal no matter what the USA or each state does with their laws. They aren't registered in the USA and very rarely travel to the USA - yippee! Thank goodness for Carnival or all their ships might go under without the European Market to keep them afloat. We all know what happened to the Paradise! I think Carnival should schedule some Non Smoking cruises though- just like Celebrity does Adults only ones... valentina1209 Posted July 5, 2004 #89 Share Posted July 5, 2004 smoking or non smoking will always be an issue. If smoke bothers you, stay out of the smoking bars, casino or anywhere else it is heavy. Unfortunately, unless the smoking lounges and bars are confined, the smoke does drift into the hallways and other non-smoking areas, and sometimes the cooling system recirculates the air in such a way that the odor does spread around. So in these cases, avoidance isn't enough for those of us who are allergic or highly sensitive to the smoke.
glrounds Posted July 5, 2004 #90 Share Posted July 5, 2004 A little off topic, but to keep things lite: For those of you who watch what you eat, here's the final word on nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting medical studies: 1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 3. Africans drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 4. The French drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. 5. Germans drink a lot of beer, eat lots of sausages and fats, yet still suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans. CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. Mike, hilarious ! ! :) Just another great example of how a statistic can be misconstrued to fit the AGENDA of the statistician (or the one that paid for it). ;) Reminds me of the football coach that at the beginning of the season put a worm in a glass of water. The worm thrived. Then he put a worm in a glass of alcohol. The worm DIED. The coach asked the team what is the implication of such an experiment. And a wise-ass defensive tackle responded with, "If you drink alcohol you won't have worms". Since I got on the other smoking thread, I wanted to badly to stay out of this one, but just couldn't let some things pass. Especially as it relates to the PARADISE. Although I'll quite agree, a change of itinerary may have helped the PARADISE non-smoking aspect. The major blows were group sales, low alcohol and gambling revenues. Group sales are the lifeblood of a cruiseline and excluding smoking clobbers so many from joining the group. The alcohol is most likely understandable from the health aspect of the non-smoker that will tend (operative word) to drink less also because of their health-oriented lifestyle. Gambling ? I have no clue. Some say since the PARADISE was the most heavily discounted ship in the fleet it tended to draw very budget-wise cruisers with little discretionary income (no offense intended here). Just my 2 cents-worth. I'm a smoker that runs 20-30 minutes a day and weight-trains another 20-30 minutes a day. I've quit many times (once for as long as 18 months). Very stupid to start again. It truly is a very addictive habit. :(

BrodyBarb Posted July 6, 2004 #93 Share Posted July 6, 2004 What I don't understand is.... we're not 'oficially' allowed to bring or use irons in our cabins because it is a fire hazard but passengers are allowed to smoke in their cabins. All that booze, sun, sea air, gentle swaying...zzzzzz.... sounds like an accident waiting to happen! Maybe I'm missing something, never having cruised before - fill me in, please!! L2J Posted July 6, 2004 #95 Share Posted July 6, 2004 I guess what gets me are the folks that think the Lido deck is smokey. I thought smoke would disippate quickly at 20+ knots, not to mention any breeze that may be blowing:rolleyes: We wont even discuss the balcony. Dannzzigg Posted July 6, 2004 #96 Share Posted July 6, 2004 To answer the poster who asked about the hazards of smoking (in terms of starting a fire) when compared to irons - I'm not speaking asan expert here, but it would seem that the danger from a lit cigarette would be minimal - they do not burn very hot when compared to an iron, and they do not burn for very long when left unattended, wheras an iron gets much hotter and although most have an auto-shutoff feature now, they will be on long enough to be a hazard anyway. Either way, as a smoker myself, I can sympathize with those who have allergies or are sensitive to the smoke. I always try to be considerate and ask those around me if they mind before lighting up. I will never flick my butts anywhere other than an ashtray, and I do try to pay attention to where my smoke is going. The one thing for which I have no solution is those areas of the ship that should be available to everyone that allow smoking. Is it fair that someone who is sensitive to cigarette smoke cannot enjoy the casino because of my smoke? I'm not sure what the solution would be, though. Smoking hours and non-smoking hours, maybe? If you are a smoker and leave them "unattended" please let me know what ship you will be on so I can avoid it. I never leave them unattended EVER. Then again that's just me.
