A good Galveston hotel?

Kind of depends on what time of year your talking about. If it is in the fall/winter season (except Dickens on the Strand & Mardi Gra) we try and stay at Casa Del Mar. We also stay in Kemah which is just outside of houston. Some people love the Harbour House really close to the pier.

The best airport to fly into is Houston Hobby. It's about a 30 - 45 minute drive to Galveston from Hobby.

The Tremont House is another nice hotel on the Strand and close to the port, but can be pricey.

Check out galveston.com for helpful information.

I would stay at Harbor House on Pier 21. It is close to the terminal, the Strand historic district and many places to eat and shop. The webcam for the ships is on top of this hotel. If you have extra time to stay in Galveston, try the Moody Gardens Hotel. The Schlitterbahn water park is next door along with the Moody Gardens. This exists of a rainforest pyramid, an Imax theater, an aquarium and more. A nice hotel on the seawall is The San Luis resort. Many of the hotels offer free parking for the week and/or shuttle to the pier.

Hobby is the closest airport about 45 minutes to Galveston.

Have a fun trip!

Hobby is a hub for Southwest, but a few other airlines fly in there. Bush is the hub for Continental but all other airlines fly there.

Tremont House can be had for $129 a night, it's a beautiful hotel and perfectly located. If you can't book Harbor House on their website for one night, call them and try over the phone. Have a great cruise!

Hobby Airport is definatly the closest and probably the easiest to fly into, however, is limited in the airlines that go into it.

Fair warning, Houston international airport is across town. Traffic is really, really bad certain times of the day (Rush hour on weekdays). Since you'll be here in September, Galveston beach traffic shouldn't be a problem :D .

Can't really state anythinga bout Galveston hotels, but there are some reasonable ones in the Clear Lake area if you're on a budget (about 30 minutes away)

Harbor House is where we have stayed both times that we cruised out of Galveston. It is a very nice, moderately priced hotel right near the pier. Both times we have walked to the pier from there, though the new terminal, where RCCL ships are, was a hike with the suitcases. The only complaint was that our room, that was at the end of the hotel near the water, got lots of noise from outside. It was great for watching the ships pull in if you happen to be awake about 4:30 am.

We are going back in 2008 and will probably stay at the Galvez or Tremont this time. Those and some others will provide shuttle service to the pier and some will allow for you to leave your car in their lots while gone, either free or small fee.

Getting from Hobby airport, we took the Galveston Limo company (not really limos but vans or buses).

All of the major chains including lower priced hotels are on the seawall. We love the Galvez which has a secured gated parking lot and a shuttle. As it is rather pricey-$125 and up, you may prefer a lower priced hotel try the Commodor or Gaido's on the Seawall. Have the Lobster bisque at Gaido's or the Shrimp Kisses at the Fisherman's Warf- it's a great warm up for all of the great cruise food. Also look into EZ park for parking and shuttle. You et a $5 discount when you book early. Galveston has a great website with awesome info. LOVE Kemah as well!

Knothead: Could you please tell me why you like to stay at Casa Del Mar. We have pre-cruise reservations there but know absoloutly nothing about the hotel.

Me and my DH have also stayed at this Hotel 3 or 4 times. We like it because we usually travel with kids and they have a separate living area with fold out couch (if you need it),separate bedroom and bunk beds across from the BD. They also have a small kitchen, balcony that have ocean views, 2 swimming pools (one heated). Their prices are pretty reasonable and they are very clean. Sometimes you can find coupons on their website along with other great info. They are not the fanciest hotel but I think they are great. They have been updating the place when we stayed there last summer. I would stay there again even without the kids.

Veronica,

Casa Del Mar is about 10 minutes away from the cruise ship pier. The island itself is not very big, so it does not take long to get anywhere. You can download a neat little island map off of the Galveston dot com web site. I hope this helps.
