How do you pronouncate ...

When in Rome.....

 

The correct pronunciation is 'key', even though the spelling is 'Caye'. It's a minor thing but as we all know, words in English aren't always pronounced the way they are spelled. I'm sure the locals would appreciate it more if you said it the correct way. They would respect you more for making the effort, as well.

 

Here's what Mirriam-Webster says:

 

Pronunciation: 'kE

Function: noun

Etymology: Spanish cayo -- more at KEY

: a low island or reef of sand or coral

 

Sorry, if this is too much information for you. :p But it's kind of a pet peeve of mine. :cool:
