Never been to Bermuda, what do you suggest?

Family of 4 (2 adults, 2 boys ages 9 & 11) We will be sailing on Norwegian Dawn (Aug 19th). We really aren't interested in any of the excursions but we would like to rent maybe a taxi/bus and tour the island. We will be there from 8-5. What's your suggestions?

You can pick up a taxi that has the special "tour guide" flag on it. It will be a little pricey, but it will be well worth it. Taxi drivers love to tell you about their beautiful island. You could also just hop a bus and sit near the driver or strike up a conversation with a "local". My recommendation for a beach stop would be Horseshoe Bay. If you're family likes to snorkel it has a great spot to do that--off to the side. One piece of advice if you do go to Horseshoe, the walk down is a breeze, but pay the $1/person for the ride up if you are meeting a bus! It is one looooong uphill walk!

I'm guessing from the fact that your there from 8-5 only that you are probably docked at Kings Warf/Dockside. This is located at the extreme southwest tip of the island. You might want to limit yourselves to things that are not to far away. You could get a ferry to Hamilton but it takes 1/2 hour each way. This could take up 1 1/2 hours in travel and wait time out of the limited hours that you have. I'm just warning you about considering some time management when viewing the different options that people will suggest.

With that said taking a taxi tour is a great idea and they could take you from dockside, up the eastern side of the island, and end up touring around Hamilton. Then you could catch that ferry back to dockside which will give you a great idea of all of the little islands in the bay as well as some great views of the houses.

Have fun.

try the public buses (pink ones) and ferry system. you can take a bus from either end ofthe island into hamilton and then a bus out from there to the other end of the island. you can also take a ferry into hamilton from either end of the island. they take you through the whole island and you get to meet nice people and see a lot. bus schedules and passes should be available at your cruise dock, but ask a local for advice since they are somewhat complicated.

Highly recommend walking up to and exploring Fort Hamilton.

Fort Hamilton is a free attraction to visit. You’ll cross over a 25-foot long drawbridge over a deep dry moat and into the nicely manicured grounds of the Fort. There are several large cannons and easy access to the upper elevations of the Fort which afford beautiful views of downtown Hamilton and the Bay. (For your best picture opportunities of downtown, go in the morning. However, you’ll get better pictures in the moat in the early afternoon as there will be fewer shadows). We highly recommend exploring the underground passages and walking the moat which is now a nicely planted garden area with lots of foliage and a pathway. The only way down to the moat is via a 108-step lighted stairway from the middle of the Fort’s grounds to the lighted underground passageway and finally out a doorway into the moat. If you like to explore Forts, this free adventure is tough to beat!
