Annefran Posted August 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 9, 2006 Hi All, I'm going on AOS in April 2007 through the Southern Caribbean (San Juan, Aruba, Curacao, St Maarten & St Thomas). I have a Verizon cell phone and I know that it will work in San Juan and St Thomas. Does anyone know if it will work in the other islands we are stopping at? I heard about something you can purchase or add to your cell phone to use it while at these islands, does anyone know anything about that? Thanks for any information! Tromler Posted August 9, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 9, 2006 Go to verizon wireless's website and go to international roaming, you can then pick the islands you are visiting and it will tell you the per minute cost.

cb at sea Posted August 10, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 10, 2006 Be prepared for VERY high roaming charges! The towers that your signal will be bouncing off of are owned by foreign folks and they can charge pretty much whatever! (We have Verizon, and got no signal at all down there!) Best bet, and cheapest, is the ship's e-mail. Or, purchase an international calling card from the port where you will be calling from, and use a pay phone. There are plenty at each port. cruiser836742 Posted August 10, 2006 #5 Share Posted August 10, 2006 We also have verizon and is there any certain charge for texting when were away? We have the unlimited plan.
TheEngineer Posted August 10, 2006 #6 Share Posted August 10, 2006 You probably will not be able to use them, at any price. Most international networks use a GSM signal which Verizon does not support. Cingular and T-Mobile are usable at roaming rates since they do use GSM. I got a signal at every port with my old Cingular phone, but didn't dare use it because of the costs. San Juan and St. Thomas were included in my plan, though. Annefran Posted August 10, 2006 Author #7 Share Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks for all the great info! I knew I could use my cell in San Juan and St Thomas, just wasn't sure about Aruba, Curacao and St Maarten. Have a good weekend.
