It will be charged to your stateroom account and you will pay when your final onboard charges are done on the last night of the cruise.

 

If you sign up for an excursion using the online system before the cruise, and you change your mind about taking the excursion, you can cancel it if online reservations are still available. Otherwise, you can cancel it on the cruise as long as it is before the time announced for closing the excursions. Usually you will be charged if you have to cancel within 24 hours of the excursion.

Unlike HAL and RCCL, when you pre-reserve a Princess excursion, you've reserved it, not paid for it. Your pre-reserved excursions will be listed in your cruise documents and when you check in at embarkation, they will be charged to your onboard account (which is paid at the end of the cruise). Your tickets will be either waiting in your cabin or delivered shortly afterwards. You have until 24 - 48 hours (depends on the excursion and ship's itinerary) to turn in the tickets for credit or to change them. There'll be a notice in the Patter when the deadline is.

Yeah, but it necessitates booking early. Many people book a tour on line because they might want it, knowing there's no up front commitment.

 

The cancellation policies on the other lines that precharge are the same as Princess'. If you cancel before online close out, usually ten days before sail date, they credit your CC for the precharge.

While there's no up-front commitment, Princess has a pretty good idea well before the ship sails of how many people are planning to take excursions and whether they'll need to schedule an additional tour. That happened a couple of times on my recent Sea Princess cruise -- several excursions were sold out but they booked additional tours to leave a little later. At the other end of the scale, they know whether a tour needs to be cancelled due to lack of interest with a heads-up to those on the tour to be able to book another. It's not a perfect system but you very rarely have any sort of line at a Princess shore excursion desk since the vast majority of the passengers have booked their tours ahead of time.

Sometimes you are notified that a tour is canceled too late to make a reservation for another one. This happened to us going from Rio to Santiago a few years ago. We were notified the night before that not enough people had signed up for a tour and it would be canceled. There might have been a few tours available but none that interested us; so we did our own thing.

That's absolutely the worse. We've had that happen a few times and weren't notified until a day or two beforehand. Way too late to make other plans.
