huntedbear Posted August 18, 2006 #26 Share Posted August 18, 2006 Now you can not go to a sporting event with out going to a arena or stadium with some form of sponcership. OK there a few left with the sponership but not many. very few people even blink a eye anymore about names rights in sports. If the cruise line did the same thing at first people would be outraged, then after a few years no one would even blink a eye about any of the deals. The biggest proplem I have is when companies take over the name of a well established event or location. Here in San Diego Jack Murphy Statium has become Qualcomm (I still call it Jack Murphy and confuse everyone under 30 or new to the city) and reciently the San Diego Sports Arena became the "I Pay One" Center (If only it was $1...hehehe) My vote is that companies that want to sponser a well established event or venue take second billing...i.e. "Freedom of the Seas, brought to you by New Balance" that way everyone knows what you're talking about and the company name still gets it's name out there. zebra36 Posted August 18, 2006 #27 Share Posted August 18, 2006 I'm just going to let it sit just a bit, but I will say it is NOT The Captain. I got my info from a guy who's purser on Princess who has a blog about behing the scenes shipboard life. Very interesting. I'm going to try to dig up the link. BTW, did you know that the entire staff gets paid weekly in US cash??? My guess would be the Matre'D. I know a lot of folks do not tip them but there is only 1 or 2 for the entire ship and if enough folks tip at the suggested? rate that can be a bundle of cash. AdGuyMike Posted August 19, 2006 Author #28 Share Posted August 19, 2006 So my original question was ... Anyone willing to guess who the highest paid person on a cruise ship is? In other words if the person who earned the most money at the end of a 7 day cruise were to walk off the ship last, who would that person be? It's not who you probably think it is. I looked for the blog last night where I got the answer from afew months ago but couldn't locate it, but the guy who wrote the blog was a purser for awhile with Princess. Naturally he said everybody's first guess is The Captain. And if I recall correctly The Captain would be the 3rd to last to walk off. 2nd to last to walk off would be the Hotel Manager. On a ship with say 1000 employees on board the Hotel Manager is responsible for roughly 850 of them. This would include all food and bar service personel (including Head Chef, Maitre d, dining room managers) cabin stewards and cleaners, front desk, purser & excursion coordinators, all entertainment onboard (even the Cruise Director reports to the Hotel Manager) all fitness/ spa people, all casino employees, gift shop workers and photographers. The remaining 150 or so would fall under the Captains responsibilty which is basically the operation, navigation, engineering and maintainance of the ship. But the last person to walk off your cruise ship... the person who after a week long trip of fun, relaxation, great food, drink, pampering and exotic ports with the most money earned would be................ GMoney Posted August 19, 2006 #29 Share Posted August 19, 2006 The Art Auctioneer, who is not employed by the cruise line, but a third party vendor. I'm not saying it's not true, but how do you know this? And are you factoring in the 3 months on/ 3 months off schedule that Captains work? I'm not saying it's not true, but how do you know this? And are you factoring in the 3 months on/ 3 months off schedule that Captains work? Sorry.I tried to find the exact article in the blog but couldn't. It's so chock full of good behind the scenes info. http://crewoffice.blogspot.com/2006_03_12_crewoffice_archive.html In addition, on our cruise last May on Enchantment, we sat and had a drink in Boleros with Carly, the Cruise Director and Adrianna the Hotel Manager. I told Adriana that I had seen a blog about this "highest paid" issue and although I don't recall verbatim what she said she basically implied that all things being equal it probably would be a true statement. GMoney Posted August 19, 2006 #31 Share Posted August 19, 2006 I'm not disputing the art auctioneer is a highly - or highest - paid individual on board. I'm guessing it's some kind of commission-based situation. I was just curious to see where the info came from. Thanks for the blog link.
piercetc4 Posted August 19, 2006 #32 Share Posted August 19, 2006 great thread- very entertaining- i can believe it is the art auctioneer- have been to an art show on the ship- fell for it and bought 3 pictures...... won't do that again- ....................... marketing is fascinating to me- i actually enjoy a good commercial......lol
happy cruzer Posted August 19, 2006 #33 Share Posted August 19, 2006 I love this thread. So why did cruising get to be as popular as it is? My experience was that it was soooo different from a land vacation. No need to make travel, dining, entertainment decisions constantly so therefore no need for ads or branding. You got on the ship unpacked once and enjoyed transportation, dining, and entertainment (almost all of it live). A lot of people are already noticing that most big ships are just a floating hotel and the concept of cruising is diminished. This branding could be just another step in that direction. Of course then someone would market "a real cruise" experience again, a few lines are starting to. It's a business evolution. Another side note the cruiseline would have to be very careful who they partner with. Walmart, Victoria's Secret, Taco Bell, Mc Donalds, Dr Pepper, Chivas, and many others would not appeal to everyone.
