There are quite a few reveiws on the Monarch....

We love the ship and crew. I have been on it three times, with DH and took in-laws on their first cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary. My Dad and step mom are going in two weeks.

Great time on the four night cruise. We leave about 9, drive down to the port, park, check in and have lunch on the ship. Its a relaxing, fun week. DH loves how he doesn't have to drive for the whole week, he just has to decide where he wants to eat (dining room or Windjammer or room service) and he would be happy if it didn't even go into any ports.

We usually stay on the ship in San Diego since we go to San Diego often. Catalina is fun to wander in and come back to the ship for lunch and the afternoon around the pool. Ensanada is a trip to La Bufadora and a little shopping in Mexico. We buy some vanilla and tequilla at the Gigante market and head back to the ship. I have bought some stained glass pieces (big pieces) in the market at La Bufadora. Really pretty pieces and they pack them so you can carry them back on board.

There is no lobster on the meal, and no Chops or Portifinos but the dining room staff is great and we enjoy the meals. I usually attend the cooking presentation during the week. They have bingo, art shows, and the casino works like all the others....

I would recommend it as a fun family reunion cruise. And some of the prices are really great! Check out Jan 8th!

We're about to take our 5th cruise on Monarch (I guess that makes us Monarch Platinum), so it's safe to say that we like her quite bit! We do the 3 night long weekend cruises, which often, but not always, are quite the party ship. The crew is one of the best we've encountered, and even thought she's a bit worn around the edges, we find almost nothing to complain about (except for a section of the pool deck Astroturf that really needs to be replaced because of too many spilled beers).

A new executive chef came onboard about a year ago, and the food quality increased dramatically.

I agree with critterchick entirely. She's a great little ship with a great crew but kind of old and worn. I've done the 3 day and 4 day cruises. They definitely have a different flavor. The four day is much more relaxed and easier going. However, I love both. Robin

I second what Critterchick and Robin have to say about the Monarch. I've been on the Monarch 4 times this year (2 were groups). DH and I are going on a 3-day in November 2006 and 4-day in February 2007. Another group in March 2007.

That said, I guess you can see that although she may be smaller than the mega ships, she is lovely, crew is attentive, and never had any complaints aoub the food. The atmosphere is also a lot more casual so just go with that in mind and enjoy yourself.
