Fees to Cash travellers' cheques? Room card for safe?

I know everyone recommends using the ATMs, but I was curious about the fees Carnival may charge to cash TCs. If I have Euro travellers' cheques, is there a fee to cash those for Euros on board. If I bring USD cheques, does anyone know the fees plus what they mark up their conversion? I just need a backup plan to the ATMs, just in case......

Also, I read on a couple of posts not to use your room key for your safe. Are there any issues with using the room key? I used ours on a previous RCCL and had no issues.....

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure on the Euro traveler's cheques, but I do know, that they did not charge any fee on American Express traveler's checques when we used ours in June. As far as using the room key, it will de-magnetize the strip, and you will need a new card. We used a library card for ours. Hope this helps:)

I would call Carnival and ask. It is quite possible the ship has no Euro currency on board. They may be able to calculate the exchange rate into dollars, but I am not sure. Good question!

Regarding the safe... your room key should work, but it is not as secure, since another copy of your room key could be used to unlock the safe.

Any card can with a magnetic stripe be used, it does not have to be a valid credit or debit card. Any such card will do.

Carnival asks that you not use your room key for the safe. The magnetic strip on the back of the card is not "industrial strength". (I guess the safe is harder on it than the door is.) I actually forgot one week and used my room key and by the 3rd day (of normal opening and closing the safe) ...the key would not open my door. I had to get a new key. (then I remembered...)

aahhh senior moments!

That is not necessarily true. Every card has a unique magnetic signature, even if they open the same doors. When I locked the room safe with my S&S card, my wife's card (same room) would not open it.

Also not true, at least not on Victory.

As far as travellers checks, they are nothing more than an interest-free loan to your bank. IMHO keep your money in YOUR account where it works for you, not for them.

We used our room key for the safe and it worked throughout our cruise but good to know that it can demagnetize it!! Next time we will not use it...thanks for the tip

Sorry not trying to hijack this thread just have a question for veryhotred about her Fascination cruise and figured this was the best way to get her attention.

When you overnighted in Nassau was the casino open while you were in port?

Again my apologies!

Bill
