ABSCruiseLuvers Posted July 8, 2004 #1 Share Posted July 8, 2004 We are considering staying here in Sep for a pre cruise night. Anyone that has any thoughts on this hotel we would love to hear. Also considering Westin Times Square as a newer choice so if you have any thoughts on that as well.
Jeanne S Posted July 8, 2004 #2 Share Posted July 8, 2004 This is a lovely grand, old hotel with a literary history. Writers used to be regulars in the lobby DR "Round Table." It has an excellnet lobby bar and sitting area from another era - if you like that this if for you. Is located near to 5th Ave in the forties - an unpretentious little gem. Cannot help withthe Westin. Jeanne
ABSCruiseLuvers Posted July 8, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted July 8, 2004 Thank you. It sounds very nice! Is it walking distace of any sites? Times Square?
Jeanne S Posted July 8, 2004 #4 Share Posted July 8, 2004 Is between 5th and 6th Avenues (I think 44th or 45th street - in the mid forties). You go west towards 7th Avenue/Broadway (they intersect) and will find yourself in the heart of Times Square and the Theatre district. A sort walk! chazaroo Posted July 8, 2004 #5 Share Posted July 8, 2004 Yes, 44th street. Great hotel. Fabulous lobby bar. In the 20s Dorothy Parker was a regular at the Algonquin Round Table along with other literary greats of the day. Other possibilities would be the Morgan or if you want ultimate hip, try the W. scooter421 Posted July 8, 2004 #6 Share Posted July 8, 2004 I have stayed here and always saw a celebrity. Bumped right into Brian Dennehey. It has charm.
Chall70 Posted July 8, 2004 #7 Share Posted July 8, 2004 You will love this hotel. The old style sophistication is really wonderful. Short walk to Times Sq., theaters, Fifth Avenue shops, Rockefeller Center, and many really good restaurants. Go for it. You won't be disappointed. sink Posted July 8, 2004 #8 Share Posted July 8, 2004 Algonquin - Stayed there seven years ago. Did not enjoy it at all. Rooms are tight. However, if you like Boutique style, then you might enjoy it. The Westin Time Square is nice, although not in the "best" neighborhood, it's close to Time Sq. Rooms are quite spacious, however it seems they could of put in a couch to fill it up. And the Westin also have Shula's steakhouse.
jimmy2x Posted July 9, 2004 #9 Share Posted July 9, 2004 Wife and I stayed at the Sofitel just a few doors down from the Algonquin for the weekend lst month (Priceline). Stopped and had a drink at the Algonquin - the Round Table is right there and behind the fireplace is a painting of Dorthy and the rest of the "usual suspects". Very nice, but am glad we stayed at the Sofitel as I understand the rooms were quite small at the Algonquin. Also just read a week or so ago that the Algonquin will be shortly undergoing a major renovation - would check that out before making a reservation. Jacqueline Posted July 9, 2004 #10 Share Posted July 9, 2004 This hotel has a lot of charm and history not to mention a convenient midtown location. I have not stayed there but was recently at a party hosted there and really enjoyed the ambiance. A cat was walking around the lobby like she owned the place ! And our host came with his dog. Pretty amusing.
