Has anyone found out after booking that your cruise has a theme that is private?

Oh brother. Lighten up! They don't have to notify you of anything. If you don't like the set up....change dates.

Lighten up....hmm..... I wouldn't have picked this date had I known beforehand right??????? Changing dates/cabins, etc with 11 of us isn't as easy as it sounds. You make it sound like my concerns are completely ridiculous, thanks for your support and have a nice day.

Ahh, ignore 'im. I read this thread alittle lightly, are you trying to change the dates? I think I would be ticked if 95% of the cruiselife was shut off from me.

Well, good luck.

Hi, not sure about changing dates yet, my TA is trying to get a reply back from NCL, he spoke to somebody there yesterday and they had no idea about any of it... so he's going thru his supervisor and they are contacting the proper channels at NCL about our concerns, etc. I'd rather not change anything.... that is the bad part, the dates/cabins are great. We are closed off from certain times, venues, etc, .... it will be interesting to see if NCL is coming up with alternate things for other cruisers to do when they normally would have gone to the late show, etc.... Thanks for the post.

I'm not quite sure your comments about the gay group is up to snuff, but I will ignore it... Just a reminder that they are not out to "hit on you and yours".... they are there to enjoy their cruise just like you are.

No cruiseline will tell you how many groups are on board nor what kind of groups they are. It isn't any of your business. A good portion of the cruise business are groups and they are on every sailing. If it is a large group, there will be times when you might not have access to an area for a few hours - but not all the time and not every day. Groups are the "bread and butter" for most cruiselines and are an avoidable thing.

What you need to do is stop worrying about who else is on the cruise and what they are doing. Just enjoy yourself. If one pool is closed for a coupla hours - go to another. If the disco is closed for a coupla hours - come back later. If a lounge is closed due to a private cocktail party - find another lounge.

Wow where did all this come from????? I WAS the gay group! I always love it when people start making unfounded assumptions with no facts whatsoever, it is so kind of you to become 'their" spokesperson, I don't ever recall when "they" voted in a spokesperson...... Just a reminder that they are not out to "hit on you and yours. I'm so relieved to hear that you cleared that up for us, but then again, that statement isn't quite up to snuff either, but I will ignore that.

It doesn't matter to me what groups or how many, in a deleted post I stated that this has been going on for many years and probably always will:D :D

Hi, I dont think it matters what large group is on board frankly, just a heads up on the venue situation is all that matters to anyone! On our cruise 2 years ago on the Sun, there were 100's of Red Hat Ladies, well what a hoot!!!!!! There were several red hat functions but they didn't interfere with any of the main venues during regular hours at all, and my kids thought they were just a scream!! When I'm at that point in my life, I want in!!! Let's face it, we all have issues. My DH is a policeman, now I can imagine that if we had a large "cop" group on board that it wouldn't go over so well for some, especially if we took over several venues during regular "open" hours, etc, etc.......... In fact, we are hoping to plan such a cruise, however....it will in no way interfere with other cruisers or shut venues down for them, I can't imagine doing that to the other cruisers who have paid to have those venues open and available to them. We like the freestyle way and this cruise with the large group means that we are much more in a "fixed" dinner situation because we'll need to eat very early, especially if it's busy, in order to get to the theater on time for the one and only show, that kind of takes the fun out of freestyle....

I wish people wouldn't jump all over other people's stories about certain cruises they've been on. I know people get very sensitive about certain issues as we've seen here and that is understandable given racism about just about everything.... but we are all here because we love to cruise and that is the main thing and it doesn't matter what color we are, what orientation we are, married/single/kids, etc...., we all have life experiences and it is really great to hear them on these boards, we can even laugh at ourselves and how we reacted to certain situations.

Keep the posts coming everyone, there have been some really great ones. I, for one, HUGELY appreciate the stories of similar situatons and support and advice, thank you....

Hi guys. Don't turn this thread into anything other than it is. The topic of this thread is cruising on a ship that has a large group booked. Doesn't matter what group. Any more discussion about specific groups will cause the whole thread to go. Thanks for your cooperation.

I don't think your concerns are ridiculous...I do think you are making a huge something out of nothing - you have your nose out of joint and you will moan about this from now until the cruise is finished.. I believe if you go, you will find a way not to have a good time because you have been treated unfairly and you will want something from someone for all of your supposed injustices..

If it is going to "ruin your vacation" then why go? Change your date - simple as that. If you and your group are not willing to do that then accept that groups are a part of cruising. Accept that no cruisline in going to tell you or anyone else what group or groups are sailing on a given date. It is the business of the cruiseline and the group involved - not yours.

If you read some of the previous posts, you read that groups are the bread and butter for cruiselines; they are not going to stop booking, they are not going to "advertise" to the general public that so-and-so group is on such and so sailing.

I respect your concern and feel that you have options and choices...none of which you seem to want to do....so go.

I would like to see NCL have some ADVERTISED theme cruises such as Big Band cruises featuring a headline big band, guest movie stars discussing their films and careers, guest vocalists from past decades etc. I am sure they would have little trouble filling the ship and those not interested would be forewarned.

Unfortunately, NCL has actually gone in the other direction. See this post for some history.

Filling the ship was not NCL's problem. Making money from a full ship was. With headline prices for cruises at the stupidly low rates that they are, the big revenue earners on cruises are now the bars, the casino and shorex. The theme cruises attracted many regular repeaters, who knew better than to waste their money on these three items. The profitability of the theme cruises plummeted - after all, NCL was paying extra for the entertainment, but actually seeing less revenue return from the cruises themselves - and so NCL withdrew them.

Back to the original topic of this thread....

I don't think the majority of people have a problem with groups being on board, until they take over the ship and take away from regular paying customers. I've travelled with a group before, but we did not close anything down or get special treatment. I'm sure everyone has some sort of group that they would not want to travel with, and would be just as upset (and rightfully so) as browniegirl. I can certainly think of a few...

Browniegirl, I hope you are able to work this out. Every cruise line should inform its customers when a large group is going to be "taking over the ship." If not, they should have the responsibility to accommodate those who are not in the group by either moving them to another cruise or providing a full refund.

Alwayssingin- Yes, thank you, I hope this can be worked out also. I 100% agree with your post, it's not the large group issue at all, it's the taking things away from the other passengers that is. And yes, I hope NCL will come up with a suitable fix to the issue.

sjbdtz - Well written, enough said.

Globalizer - It is a shame that the theme cruises put on by the cruiseline has gone away, that way everybody could enjoy the theme!! The hard part is that we LOVE the old rock music....it will be hard to have those venues going on and we can't even watch them...bummer!

Dolphins - I agree, but as others have stated NCL has gone the other route and only the large consortiums do them now....too bad!

tomluvsaida - Good point....I will definitely look into that advice. Yes, I see that fellow cc'er had an issue and they changed cruise lines, wow! There is always that option isn't there!

Seamama1 - Little miss sunshine strikes again....

Hoping to hear from my TA today.... but as he put it, the wheels sometimes do not turn as fast as we'd like... that's okay. I know that when he talked to the customer service people the other day, they claimed to know nothing about these events onboard.... I am so glad I found the website advertising it!!!

Thanks everyone for your input.

Leah
