I know it's early, but I really wanted this hotel. Lowest price I could find was $190 pre-paid, so I saved a few bucks:

5* Coal Harbor

Rate per night:

$153.00

Tax recovery charges & fees:

$36.58

Trip total:

$189.58

Have never used priceline before so hame a couple questions.

I tried a bid on priceline for San Pedro for $75 for 10/27/2013 on a 3.5 star which was not accepted. How long do I have to wait before re-bidding? What is recommended in amt to raise bid. I saw a few entries that were accepted with a bid of $75...It also asked me to put in another star level or new area neither of which I want to do as I am not arriving until later that day and wont be venturing far and this is area I want.

I don't think there are any hotels in San Pedro with a 3 star rating other than Crowne Plaza and Doubletree....so I would not be uncomfortable with dropping the rating to 3, and re-submitting. (But I suggest you check first). If you change the area, it will put you north into Carson and Torrance.

My two cents...

I have stopped using the "FREE RE-BID" for San Pedro and wait the 24 hours to rebid only in Area 5 for 3.5 stars since I don't mind waiting.

I like raising bids in $5 increments since it does not bother me if I lose out on saving just a few dollars.

Before using Name Your Own Price, I do check pricing in the List View and the Express Deals. Several times for other cities I have found a satisfactory price without going through the bidding process.

There are different philosophies regarding how far out one should begin bidding for hotels. Since I like everything is place as soon as possible, I generally start bidding at the time I make my cruise booking. Some make the case that you get better pricing the closer you are to the check-in date. I have held out increasing my bid until closer to check-in for other cities but always have a back-up cancellable reservation in place.

For what it's worth, below is my history of winning bids (before taxes & fees) for 3.5* in San Pedro (Area 5). My recollection is that all my bids started at $65.

bid on 06/28/11 for 12/07/11 (162 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 06/29/11 for 11/22/11 (146 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 09/20/11 for 02/17/12 (150 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $65

bid on 09/20/11 for 03/03/12 (165 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $65

bid on 07/03/12 for 10/27/12 (116 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 07/03/12 for 11/26/12 (146 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 10/01/12 for 01/01/13 ( 92 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $95

bid on 09/30/12 for 01/16/13 ( 92 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $95

bid on 05/20/13 for 10/04/13 (137 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 05/20/13 for 10/19/13 (137 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 05/20/13 for 03/31/14 (315 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

bid on 06/19/13 for 04/29/14 (314 days to check-in) winning Crowne Plaza at $75

Are Crowne Plaza and Doubletree in zone 3 or 5. I assumed 3 since its labeled San Pedro, but a previous post indicates they got Crowne Plaza in zone 5. Don't want to bid in the wrong zone, can some clarify.

Thank you

When I just pulled up the page to bid it shows 3 as San Pedro and 5 as Port of Long Beach...what am I missing?

Debr

What city did you enter for your initial search?

Viewing Name Your Own Price using San Pedro, CA for the initial city search, I get six areas:

1- Long Beach

2- Long Beach Airport

3- Port of Long Beach

4- Rancho Palos Verdes

5- San Pedro

6- Torrance-Carson

The Crowne Plaza and Doubletree are the popular 3.5 star hotels near the World Cruise Terminal in San Pedro and are located within Area 5 - San Pedro.

Hmmm, not sure why your screen is different.

On the name your price page, I put in San Pedro, CA as the city. I get the following:

1. Long Beach – detail map icon_deal.gif Best deal2

2. Long Beach Airport Area – detail map icon_deal.gif Best deal3

3. Port of Long Beach – detail map icon_deal.gif Best deal4

4. Rancho Palos Verdes – detail map icon_deal.gif Best deal5

5. San Pedro – detail map icon_deal.gif Best deal6

6. Torrance - Carson – detail map

Select the San Pedro Area (regardless of the number), then the 3 1/2 stars, then your bid price.

Good luck--let us know how it goes:)

I wish I had kept my bidding info from two years ago when I got Crowne Plaza!

Just tried again and this what I did and got ...

1st page . Entered Location . San Pedro, Ca and dates

Clicked bid now and this is what appeared

1 . Long Beach

2 . Torrence

3 . San Pedro

4 . Long Beach Airport

5 . port of Long Beach

6 . Rancho Palos Verdes

Why would I get a different page...now I'm too nervous to bid!!

Very strange. I tried it with three different browers and got the same thing with San Pedro being #5 each time.

As long as you select San Pedro and 3 1/2 * you will be fine. Go for it.

Well, I gave it a try ... #3 . San Pedro .... Luckily my bid was not accepted. When I got the email stating my bid could not be accepted for LONG BEACH. Tomorrow I will try #5 at a very lowball price and see what the rejection says...so strange!

Did you call Priceline? I am curious how you came out and if you got the Crowne Plaza in San Pedro.

I got an email telling we that it didn't matter what the number was, just pick San Pedro. I also questioned when my bid was rejected it indicated "my bid could not be accepted for the Long Beach area". I was told San Pedro is in the long beach area. I am glad I have all the emails, so if I eventually have a bid accepted and its not in San Pedro, I will have some evidence of the info I was given. I've been bidding every 24 hours in San Pedro, which was a 4 one day, 3 another, 5 another. The Priceline person said the number on the left can change because they are always adding new areas....hum, really! I'll post if and when I get anything.

Priceline

Date: Friday, July 26, 2013

Number of nights: 1 (pre cruise)

Hotel: The Edgewater

Stars in bid: 4 star (or higher)

Area: Seattle, WA

Winning Bid: $195

Taxes & Service Fees: $38.53

Coupon (5% off): summer (saved $9.75)

Total Price: $223.78

I'd been bidding twice daily for the last few weeks...still feel like it's expensive, but keep reminding myself that it IS a "big city" and saw that there's some music festival going on that same weekend. There were a ton of hotels with no vacancy, so am very happy to have this off of my to-do list.

Seattle is generally quite expensive in the summer, but I think you could have gotten the price down if you waited until next May to book. Great hotel though, and a fantastic location.
