rules for wearing white

I think a navy blazer, (in linen, not wool) with white pants would be casually elegant and make for some wonderful photo's on the beach. No tie's needed unless you all like them.

I agree with Jane that this would be a great and classic look for a Bermuda beach wedding.

Yes, Florida does seem to have it's niches! :)

Depends on how fashionable the man is.

Thursday night I attended the FGI's annual Night of Stars held at Ciprani's. My invitation said Black Tie.

http://fgi.org/index.php?news=507

I saw Anna Wintour, Ann Hathway, Julianne Moore, Carolina Herrera, Iman (without David Bowey - phooey!) Gwynnth Paltrow and many other well known names. They were in gorgeous gowns and their escorts were in tuxes. (even iconoclast Simon Doonan wore one) Most of the other men - even the "everyday" non-celebs (like agents, pr directors, etc) were in tuxes too. Yes, some men were in dark suits, but I'd say about 80% were in tuxes.

At the UN....well, I guess it really depends on the invitee list. The UN draws a really mixed crowd because of the variety of functions. Was it a UN sponsered event or was it another organization that hired out the UN ballroom for the evening? If it's a UN sponsored event, I'm sure there were some very interesting "native" formal outfits too - I always love to see those.

it was a UN event.. i didn't ask how the women were dressed.. :(

and you're probably right the beige suit would wash out against the sand.. but i LOVE beige suits on men :)

Jane110,

Thank you for your kind response, I concur with your answer that was my thought too about the beige suit blending into the pictures. So next question black or brown shoes or Black and white?

Thanks

Definitely not black or brown.

When you say "black and white" did you mean like a saddle shoe?

Personally, I don't like black with navy.

I think that a white buck lace-up (a la Great Gatsby) would look smashing or a nice camel, cognac or dark tan loafer or lace-up would be great looking. If you want a saddle shoe, I'd go for tan and white, not black and white.

OKay so black and brown are out! I really try to follow the european trend lines, mostly Italy. I was wearing square toe shoes in 2000 after being in Italy I had several looks at me after arriving back in the states. So unless I could find a buck with a square toe I would have to think long and hard, even though I agree it would look smashing.

I was thinking of a spectator, but it sounds like you think tan and white would be better. They were warn during the Gatsby era as well.

Any thought are greatly appreciated. thank you so much!!

I have to disagree with you! Please go on a college campus, high school campus and etc. I see white jackets over jeans or even colored casual pants all year long! My Daughter is studying in NY in the Fashion Industry and she also agrees with me! I think it depends on your age how you look at this subject! AS far as the white shoes, she has even said that all ages wear white shoes all year long with a pair of nice jeans or casual colored pants! EVEN IN NY! I think I read you were from NY, What Fashion Industry to you work in?

On Board

Sorry....I agree with Jane, as usual! ;)

I've read Jane's many posts, and have yet to find her not up on what's current out there, and with impeccable taste, I might add.

I personally am not a fan of white so I wear it very infrequently, summer or winter; home, or abroad. And I hate white shoes, so those I never wear. My mom is a nurse--perhaps she passed on to me her hatred of white shoes ;-)

I thought I was the only one! I have very few white things in my closet, and only one pair of white shoes, and they are strappy sandals, and actually, I hardly ever wear them. I own a couple of white blouses, one white sweater, and one white turtleneck, but that's it. I just don't care for it. :)

That's fine. :)

High school and college students are hardly the people to take fashion and style from. Yes, yes, I know that some of them come up with some of the trends. But 99% of the time, the student look is hardly where fashion takes it cue!

I think the key word here is "studying". It means she's still in the process of learning and has a long way to go.

BTW, since you asked my background, I have to ask, where does your knowledge stem from?

What one can wear does indeed depend on age and figure. But a pair of pants worn with pure white shoes in the middle of winter in a northern climate will never look fashionable on any age.

I work in the New York City Fashion Industry.

I have a 20+ year background in fashion. I started as a photo- stylist for some major NY fashion photographers where I styled ads and editoral pages. After that I was a fashion editor for a womens publication. From there I worked for two major clothing companies, a small one where I designed the first few seasons til we could afford a full time designer, then I went on to be their merchandiser. I took the company from $0. to $10 million a year in sales in 3 years. From there I was recruited as a merchandiser for a company with a sales volume of $175 million a year. My last full time corporate job was as an apparel licensing agent where I worked with designers and created their licensing programs. Carolina Herrera was one of my many clients.

I'm now a consultant to a number of apparel, fabric and accessory business's, including a couture designer who has his own line and teaches couture construction at FIT, a designer who makes outrageously gorgeous designs with her own hand printed fabrics and another client owns a ladies suit & sportswear company and also teaches at FIT. And lastly, I write a monthly fashion column for an image consulting company's website.

Additionally, I'm a 10+ member of The Fashion Group (our industry's professional organization) and 4 years ago was asked to join one of it's executive committee's. Last year I was asked to be co-chair of that committee and will likely be elected Chairperson of the committee in the next year when the current Chairperson leaves the position.

To be a member, you have to be in an executive level position in the industry for at least 5 years. However, there are associate memberships for young people in the early stages of their careers. Your daughter should become a member after she gets her first job and has been in it for a few years.

;)

I think that says it all.

Wearing tattered jeans and baggy sweatshirts is not my idea of fashion. I will leave the kids and young adults to their own take on fashion and dress to feel and look good. In my case, this does not resemble standard high school and college attire.

As far as fashion "rules" are concerned, we all are able to make up our own minds. However, some folks post to ask opinions. That is what the board is all about.

In my "real world", I wear fabrics and colors appropriate for the season and locale. I live in FL as well.

You couldn't pay me to wear what my teen age niece and her friends wear. I take her shopping for her school clothes every year, and it's excruciating from beginning to end! :) I try to let her be her own person, but I have to really bite my tongue sometimes and pray that this phase will pass. (But, in all honesty, her choices aren't as bad as some of them I've seen, so there is hope.) ;)

I'm also very close with my 21 year old neice and have taken her shopping all her life. I'm very careful not to cross the line with her about what trends she's wearing. She'll ask me if what she likes looks well on her and I give her my opinion. She's 5'8" and about a size 10, so she's a larger size than most of her friends, me (size 6) and her mother (sz 2). However, she's extremely well proportioned, so her choices aren't too limited.

Fortunately, she hates anything she feels is "hootchie" or "skanky" looking so we never had to pull her away from the Gwen Stefani hooker looks! LOL!

She's now in graduate school and is on a student budget and dresses in that typical universal "student look" and I never comment on it, because I know she'll grow out of it on her own. I only comment on individual pieces and if they flatter her figure and her coloring. She loves me to go shopping with her because I don't negatively judge her choice of looks and I never try to pursuede her to dress in any style that's not "her".

Jane

PS Thank you for all your kind words. :)

I'm really looking forward to when my niece outgrows the "shirts with the ATTITUDE comments on the front" phase! :) You know the ones: "Talk to the Hand." etc. etc. LOL! (But at least it's not the hooker look!)
