Snorkeling at Grand Caymen

I have read another post where someone suggested taking a bus to a certain beach on 7-mile and walking back (I think it was three miles) stopping and snorkeling along the way. I can't remember the post or the name of the beach... Would this be a good choice for people new to snorkeling? We thought we might need help getting started or being shown where the best spots are to go.

Does any one remember the details? Oh, and we don't have our own equipment...

Thanks so much to those of you who answered my last post.

Appreciate it, Weebo

Don't know about snorkeling the beach area, but if you're not set on doing the beach you can snorkel at Eden Rock. It's a dive center just off to the right of the downtown tender drop area - maybe a 3 minute walk - and they rent gear. They have an area where you can snorkel, and even watch some of the shore divers going out under you. we had our own gear but snorkeled there a few years back, which got us interested in diving .... a whole new addiction!!! Here's their website .....

I have recommended strolling south to Sunset House but do not recommend a novice take this route. No experience and no equipment makes a tour a better plan for you. Many tours geared to novices will spend a few minutes ensuring you know the basics of the gear - especially the safety vest - and HOPEFULLY will watch you a bit more closely.

Sunset house has good snorkeling as does Eden - but the depths are not 'stand up' territory - and there's minimal beach. I've seen new snorkelers freak when they see their first decent sized fish - GF a 2 foot barracuda  - and then feel compelled to demonstrate that man CAN walk on water...better in a controlled environment the first time...

The DIY plan would be good if you could pair up with some experienced folks.... I took some newbies out with me once. Ended up practicing life saving skills when I had to tow the wife back too shore as she got to tired. As we went out farther and farther I kept asking 'you OK?'

"Yes, I'm fine" .... until about 3/4 mile from where we left the boat "I can't go another foot" . Her hubby swam back escorted by my wife while I did the snorkeler's push on the wife.... lesson learned

Oh yes - I kept giving the diver's distress signal to the capt of the boat we were snorkeling from .... he enthusiastically waved back and when I finally got to the boat exclaimed "great swim huh?" dingbat :p

I agree with KaC-Cruiser, Eden Rock is great and cheap!!! I was there this past April and if you have your own equipment, snorkeling is FREE. My buddy and I went scuba diving while my parents went snorkeling. We all had a blast.

I agree that Eden Rock and Sunset house are both great snorkeling locations. However, if you had your own equipment, you could go to this little out of the way place called Smith's Cove. It's not that much farther up the road from Sunset House and there are few people that visit this spot. Theres a great little beach and lots to see underwater. I took my mother there a few months back for her first snorkel and she is now fully addicted!:)

Sunset House is 1 mile south of town - I've walked that plenty of times. But there are no sidewalks and don't forget that the cars are driving on the other side.... SC is beyond that, but I could not tell you how far as it ain't a place I go to....
