Need some Help...Insurance questions for Vets

Recommended Posts

I booked a cruise through Celebrity last week.

I have until June to make the final payment.

My mother has some health issues that may cause us to cancel.

Should I get travel insurance NOW,(10 months out) or could I wait a little while down the road?

Am I able to cancel my trip before final payment, and get a full refund?

Celebrity said yes on the phone, but i thought I had read differently.

Another question is..

I went to insuremytrip.com.

It asks for total cost of trip.

Do I put in just for the cruise, airline tickets, and hotel?

What about the cost for shore excursions? (will be 1200.00)

Do I include that too or not?

Im a newbie and Im at a lost as to what to do.

Any help would be great!

Thanks so much.

Immediately. Because it will cover pre-existing conditions which sounds like your situation.

Insure for your total costs including airfare, cruise, shore excurions, and any other prepaid expenses. You wouldn't need to insure your pre or post trip hotel expenses unless they are paid in advance. If you reserve a room and cancel before the penalty time no problem.

You should get a full refund minus your insurance fee.

Thanks for such a quick reply!

I wont be able to purchase the airline tickets until next month.

I am saving every paycheck up until cruise time.

Do I still put in the total amount for everything,(cruise, air, excursions)even though they will be purchased in different months leading up to the cruise?

cruise..made down payment last week

airline tickets...being bought next month

shore excursions.....being paid for in/around april

Our cruise is in Sept.

I hope that makes sense?

Thank you for your help!

Provide your estimated total expenses that you will prepay. If you have to cancel for something that you have all ready paid for you will be reimbursed. If you haven't paid for them yet and have to cancel you wouldn't need to be reimbursed. If there is a phone # on the website you can call the company and ask them specific questions too.

The insurance will only cover you for the non refundable cancellation charges

and that depends on when you cancel.

I also think that excursions may not be covered, because you do not have to book them now and they may be cancellable up until your departure.

The advice on the pre-existing condition waiver is very important in your case

and requires that you buy insurance within the allowed timeframe.

Besides getting a plan within the deadline, you need to be sure your mother meets the "Medically Stable / Medically Fit" rules. In a nutshell, the person with the pre-existing condition has any medical condition that is known, foreseen or expected to "take a turn for the worse".

In addition some plans include wording which states "occurring to Your Family Member requiring Your immediate care". In other words, you have to be the primary caregiver.

I hope this helps.

I am so confused over what policys I need to get.

My mother has diabetes, low blood pressure and a herniated disk.

She also has had a mini stroke in the past.

She is 62.

Im afraid she will back out at the last minute(because of one of the above)

and I will be out 7300.00(Im treating her to this cruise)

I called insuremytrip and he was having computer trouble,so he couldnt really help me yet.

Is there a policy that would give me back the entire 7300.00?

I dont want to go without her either.

Thank you all for your input!

I have a few questions:

When did you make your initial trip deposit?

Where does your Mother live?

Is it only her that's going on the trip, or are you looking to cover anyone else?

Hi there,

I made my first deposit on Nov 20th.

We are in Calif.

Its me and my mother that are going.

I have no health issues.

She has always wanted to see Ireland.

Ireland doesnt really interest me,but this wont stop me from taking her.

This is her dream vacation and I really want her to see it.

So I really dont want to go without her..kwim?

Does insurance companys want something stating that she is "medically fit to travel"?

Thank you for any help!

First, while insurance companies require the person to be "medically fit to travel", you don't actually want a note from her doctor saying so right now. That's because claim departments tend to look at that as a hint that the condition was really more serious and the only reason the note exists now was because you were planning on making a claim.

Next, since your initial deposit was on Nov 20th, you still have a week or two to decide on a plan, so you can shop around. I forgot to ask, but if your total trip cost is $7300, then when you get the insurance, round the coverage up to $4,000 (same cost to you as $3,750).

Go to www.google.com and search for "trip insurance". You'll be able to find a company or two that can help you figure out which plan to get.

Thank you for your help.

I wasnt expecting insurance to be around 7-8 hundred dollars.

I will look around some more.

Thanks again! :)

If you don't mind telling me, what's your age (i know your mom's 62) and is the per person trip cost $7300 or is $7300 the total trip cost?

I'll tell what the range of insurance costs will be with thi sinfo.

Hi,

Im 38.

I talked to Celebrity and they said "they" have the best insurance around.

I dont really believe that though.

Thanks for your help.

Here are the different prices you will find. The costs are the Total Policy Cost (not per person) and I left off the more expensive ones.

Based on this info:

2 Travelers, Ages: 38 and 62, Each Person's Trip Cost is $7300

the plans range from $825 to $943.

Based on this info:

2 Travelers, Ages: 38 and 62, Each Person's Trip Cost is $3650

the plans range from $397 to $469.

Thanks so much!

Our trip is around 7300.00 for the both of us.

I saw one that interest me,but it wanted my flight info and I dont have that yet.

Do you know how it works if she couldnt go?

I mean,I would get a refund for her,but would I still have to take the trip by myself?

Thanks again!

If your trip's about $7,300 total, round it up to $4,000 per person when you order the insurance. Travel insurance plans coverage goes in $500 increments so $4,000 per person is the same cost as $3650. Rounding it up gives you a higher trip interruption limit, too. Not everyone knows about this little tip, so whenever we take telephone orders we always tell the person we'll round it up & why.

If your mom can't travel for a covered reason (hurt, sick, etc.) then both of you can cancel your trip and get the refund on your non-refundable trip costs.

As for your flight info, don't worry about having that now. You can add that later. Plus you can estimate your travel dates & correct them after you get your plane tickets. As long as your trip's less than 31 days in length, it's the same cost.

You have been such a huge help to me.

I really do appreciate it.

Im going to start looking again in the morning.

I really hope my mother meets the "medically fit" part of it.

I think thats the only part that scares me.

Again,youve been wonderful!

I hope that was the last of my questions.:o

Hi Dawna,

Here's another tip: Travel Insurance is the same cost no matter who you get it from and it's the same price whether you buy it over the phone or online. Since you are new to this all, I suggest that whoever you decide to order your policy from, you call them to set up the policy. Ask as many questions as you need to ask to feel satisfied it makes sense. Don't feel rushed through the phone call. I can't speak for other companies, but we don't limit our calls to fit a specified length and it's not uncommon for us to have 25 minute or longer calls to be sure someone understands what they are buying.

And if you have any more questions for me, ask them. It's better to take your time getting it than rushing through.
