CaribbeanCrush Posted December 9, 2006 #1 Share Posted December 9, 2006 I heard have heard that there may have been some damage to the coral reef caused by the hurricanes. Can anyone tell me if this is correct and if so, is it still worth snorkling there?
IslandJim Posted December 9, 2006 #2 Share Posted December 9, 2006 Most severe damage was to soft coral formations and shallow coral. Those in deeper areas are still very much alive and even those damaged are showing Nature's healing powers. Fish are abundant and yes, it's worth the trip if you get a boat snorkel tour and go to reefs in the 30 to 60 foot depth range.
CaribbeanCrush Posted December 9, 2006 Author #3 Share Posted December 9, 2006 IslandJim, I'm not sure that my wife will be up to the 30-60 ft. depths. Can you recommend some shallower places? Thanks for your help.
IslandJim Posted December 9, 2006 #4 Share Posted December 9, 2006 With shallow reefs we always come back to the same point: They are recouperating and not in great shape. They say that the fish are pretty abundant at Playa Corona, just a little ways south of Dzul-Ha. Give it a try and report back for the benefit of us all. nolaAlive Posted December 9, 2006 #5 Share Posted December 9, 2006 I did some shore snorkeling from both Dzul Ha and Playa Uvas a few weeks ago. You can get to some pics from here: http://www.zydecocruiser.com/ncl_sun_2006/Cozumel/coz_1.htm
