Question Re: Dining On The Star

I just read on here that the restaurants on the Star were all booked by

7 p.m. on the first day of a cruise. This was a shock to me.........on the Dream a couple of years ago, we just went to restaurants when we wanted and ate, no problem.

Can someone please explain to me what we must do regarding reservations right when we board for our cruise? I'm really in the dark about this (and we surely don't want to starve;) ).

Thanks for your help/advice.

we were just on the star 11/14 and we had to always book days in advance... there were times, we never got reservations so we opted for the buffet, they always had like a 9p reservation open, but that was too late, and the ginza never was crowded , but the service is horrible there, i recommend when you get on, book all your reservations for the whole week, i know that kinda takes the freestyle concept out , but i would do that, so you dont have to eat in the buffet everynight like we did ,,

hope this helps

adn reservations are on speed dial in your cabin phone, and they are open 8a-5p to take calls..

THANKS for the rapid reply!!

I still don't understand how people know what restaurant to make reservations for, etc. when they've not been on the ship.

Any suggestions?

This is only an eight day cruise (we usually take long ones) and I don't want to miss out on something special.

Are you aware that several dining rooms DO NOT require reservations?

For people that want to go to the specialty restaurants (that require a reservation) they may have checked on the boards for copies of the freestyle dailies to plan their days.

We never went to any of the specialty restaurants and never made any reservations and had no problems walking up to the "free" restaurants and being seated immediately.

In the later hours, we noticed several empty tables at some of the specialty spots, so I think you may have to think about booking a later hour dining time as a possibility if you want to wait and see.

I have been on the Star twice.

The Versialles and Aqua main restaurants only take reservations for large groups. They are a walk up operation.

I have never had a problem getting reservations for the specialty restaurants early in week and I generally make mine on the second day of the cruise after we have had time to unwind and figure out our plans.

We like to eat early (5:30-6:15 arrival) and have never had a problem at that time. Anyone who wants to eat during the prime hours of 6:15-8:00 should understand that there will be waits at the main dining rooms and the specialty's will fill up quick for those times.

We made reservations for Cagney's two nights in a row the third or fourth day into the cruise. We didn't want to pay the $20 per person, so we asked for the 5:30 seating both nights. No problem with that. I didn't check to see what the availability was later in the evening though. A couple days before the cruise was over, we got reservations for 9 people (table for four and table for 5) for Endless Summer the last night of the cruise.

We looked over the menu's for the "free" restaurants and made our entire weeks reservations (for 9) within the first few hours of boarding. We originally did 5 nights in Versalles, 1 night in Aqua, 1 in La Trattoria, and 1 in Endless Summer. It wasn't until after the first two nights in Versalles that we decided to try Cagney's, and then later in the week wanted to go back to Endless Summer.

Oddly enough, while the Aqua and Versailles had the exact same menu, there was ALWAYS a line (and a wait) to get into the Versailles. We tried it one night and the service was far worse than Aqua! Go figure! Anyway, go for the Aqua if you aren't eating in a specialty restaurant.

We ate at Cagney's twice and it was EXCELLENT! Roshell is excellent so request her if you eat there. (Mocha Creme Brulee...mmmmmmmmmmm). We ate at Endless Summer (which my dingy friend kept calling "Endless Summer Nights"!!! LOL), which is free but needs a reservation, and it was good, too.

We called Clara (works w/ Carlos, the concierge) to make our reservations on the first day. The have copies of the menus for you to review.

I LOVED the Star! Have a blast!

Don't worry about resies for the regular restaurants, you won't have problems with them. I would suggest you make reservations for the free speciality restaurants as soon as you board because those fill up the fastest. The fee speciality restaurants will still have some openings by the second day or so. Make your resies early and then cancel if you change your mind. Just be sure to give them a day's notice so you don't get charged.

We never had any problems on the Star with the main dining rooms.
